TODD you and I really DO share a lot of the same musical interests...uh... I'm interested in knowing whether you dig any of my C.S. music, 'cause we pretty much have some of the same influences...
I've loved the Knife for years.... had SOME trouble gettin' others into 'em. It's definitely an acquired taste!
"ooohh my favorite towwwnnn...
" I have been to London One tyme....etc.
"My favorite town is OSAKA, my favorite... " Yes Indeedee!
Did you ever hear their cover of "Luck of the Irish" with a John Lennon soundin' Japanese dude singing the MAIN vocals? It's fuckin' bad-ass! -phlegm

I'm sorry to have to miss it. Very energetic ladies who keep the fun in music.
Incidentally Phlegm, I like their version of "Luck of the Irish", but I kind of prefer their version of the "Hokey-Pokey"- CLASSIC!

For some strange reason, the one that's always stuck in my head the most is: "blue-blue-blue oyster .... Oyster poisoning" =-> pronounced of course "brew-brew-brew.... etc.
There's another band from the ASIAN side of pop culture I've been DYIN' to find out more about --- they played in the fancy restaurant that KILL BILL 1 takes place in... They we're BAD-ASS! Was it Shonen Knife -- I don't think so, but I forgot to check the credits...

The band in the House of Blue Leaves scene is "the 5,6,7,8's". (yeah, I went to IMDB.com) Tarantino heard a CD of the band at some store in Japan, when he was scouting locations. I need to check up on them, myself.
Hey, Moray- have you heard them?

Phlegm, Hop on Pop, SRM... great to hear you are Knife fans.
Blue blue blue Oyster is one of my faves too. So many other fun greats too.
I was lucky to get the chance to recorded "Mango Juice" with them for their "Heavy Songs" CD. .... They often use an instrumental version of that as the intro music to start their shows.... it sends shivers down my back every time.
I don't know the 5 6 7 8's... I'll look out for them.
Sone Deaf are another great Japanese band... I saw them in Neyagawa, they were the Ramones for Marky, and did their own set too.
Cheers

Moray- that's cool you got to do some work with the Shonen Knife ladies. Another of my favourite Japanese bands is Guitar Wolf. They're kind of like a Clash/Ramones-style band. Hip stuff!

I'm not familiar with Blue Hearts- I'll have to do some checking. Thanks, Todd- I can always count on you to bring up some interesting artists. As we're in the Pacific rim, two more faves are Yoko Kanno (with the Seatbelts, as well as a composer of anime music- "Cowboy Bebop", etc), and Hiromi (jazz pianist- her latest album has David Fiuczynski on guitar).

Guitar Wolf, and Blue Hearts are great bands too.
Yes, the Blue Hearts did "Linda Linda". That songs is still a big favourite with a lot of the young bands here. We once played an event and there were 3 covers of "Linda Linda".
The Blue Hearts split and basically re-formed as the High Lows, and they recently split again.... I can't remember the name of their new band. But my bassist and drummer will know as their big fans.

The Shonen Knife gig in Osaka was great..... I haven't seen that much body surfing from a crowd in a really long time...
I spoke to Naoko san before the show, and she said they're planning to go in to the studio to record a new CD this August... so more fun tunes to look forward to...
Iku O Iko O, every body let's go....Oops I'm still a bit high,
