No Where Boy
Today I saw No Where Boy, the movie about John Lennon's youth. It made me love him even more because his genius was born out of such tortured family turmoil. His bond with Paul was also very moving. There are some great musical segments that really reveal the beauty of the early roots of what was to become the "Beatle sound". Frankly, I think that Paul was the glass and John was the water. Their collaboration was vital to their existence. They needed each other to survive and to succeed. It was a classic friendship. The impact of Elvis was also very inspirational for John and many other boys of that era. Elvis was like a cool father figure who embodied everything about masculinity that these boys needed and couldn't get from weak or absent fathers. The fact that Paul and John both had lost their mothers not only gave them something in common, it shaped the romantic longing of their songs which seemed to be based on unrequited love or extremely idealized love that was always beyond reach. I highly recommend this movie. I thought it was going to be just another biopic but it was much more.
I felt like I was there at the birth of the Beatles.

Yes, it's in limited release but it will probably go to video pretty soon and you can rent or buy it. I hope you get to see it. I felt like it was a piece of the Beatle puzzle that I have never seen before and I thought I had seen it all!

Yeah, yeah, yeah! It's simply amazing that The Beatles' story continues to unfold 40 years after they stopped. We're looking forward to seeing this when it's released on DVD.

Finally saw this great film, Richard - thanks for the recommendation. Not only did it fill in some missing pieces biographically, but it was just a really well-made film, which caught the zeitgeist of late 50's Liverpool. Even without a single Beatles' song in it, it still has a pretty killer soundtrack.
I almost got chills when John met Paul. Call me sentimental. The Beatles' story is so eternal. Does anyone remember a film called "Backbeat?" That's another great early Beatles film that deserves to be watched again. It focuses more on John's relationship with Stu Sutcliff, and the influence of Stu's girlfriend, Astrid.

I'm glad you liked the film, Tom. I got choked up when Paul hugged John at the funeral of John's mother. What a bond they had. Yes, "Backbeat was an excellent movie and once again I got emotional when John's murder was referred to at the end.
The whole story of the Beatles is almost Shakespearian in scope. The planets aligned and the earth turned a particular way on it's axis and it all came together in one perfect storm that will never happen again. I feel so fortunate to have grown up with them in my life. I don't know if they changed the world but I know they changed mine.
