The most over rated album ever
Is this the "greatest album of all time?" I don't think so.

Other than Mr. Kite, I'd give them all an A. Getting Better, Leaving Home, Fixing a Hole, those are beautiful.
I love Keith's music, but I don't share his thoughts.

They're all A star songs for me except Within You Without You and When I'm 64..Even those are good songs -just not to my taste..Benefit Of Mr Kite i think is absoloute genius .Amazing song and track.,.,
Its my 2nd fave Beatle album after the White Album..
The overated Beatle album for me is definitely critics favourite 'Revolver'..Dr Robert and 'And Your Bird Can Sing' are fun -but both mediocre by late Beatles standards- as is Love You Too..and the sequencing of I Want To Tell You' next to 'Got To Get You Into My Life (both with exactly the same rythm ) is definitely not good..

Yeah, that's the thing. Even though I personally am not so into Mr. Kite or even within without, still I can see they are quality works.
When I'm 64 is wonderfully written.
How could you not like Fixing a Hole?
She's Leaving Home is so musical.

I always hated When I'm 64. Pepper is my 5th favorite Beatle album. Most overrated of all time, no, there are plenty others that fill that bill.
The Wall is one. The Long Run by the Eagles I always thought is awful. Tunnel of Love by Springsteen also.

Without question, all of Pepper is extremely well recorded and the songs are meticulously crafted. The harmonies and lead vocals are gorgeous as always.
Even their worst songs were better than the best of some other bands. That being said, There are just too many songs on this album that don't belong on what was supposed to be a grand thematic masterpiece.
It's no wonder that even Lennon himself felt that it was inconsistent and a silly idea from the start. It was supposed to be a kind of rock opera about the Pepper band, perhaps exploring the themes of loneliness, love and friendship but songs about parking meter maids, Mr. Kite, a teen leaving home, fixing a hole, a sitar raga that belonged on a different album are arbitrary fillers connected only by a technical crossfading of the tails of some songs merging into the intros of other songs that don't really line up musically or thematically. It was contrived to seem like all the songs were actually connected with purpose which they were not. It's like half a concept sewn together with a few random songs that were left over from other albums to create a whole concept.
The media are the ones who convinced people that this was a revolutionary album of wedded songs that told a coherent story. Well recorded, well sung, mostly well written, different for it's time, but definitely not the greatest most influential album of all time as it is often referred to by music critics.
It's a very good album with a few brilliant songs on it. I'm just saying that it's not the greatest most revolutionary album of all time which is the way it is generally characterized in the musical history books. This is just my subjective opinion and not a statement that I present as a fact.

Sgt. Pepper's is a "whole is greater than the sum of its parts" kinda thing, IMO.
Agreed, the theme was not followed through on and some of the songs are a bit slight, but that is precisely what makes the album what it is… those songs emphasize just how good the really great ones are.
In that way, it's similar to another one of my all-time favorite albums:
Guided By Vioces - Alien Lanes
A 28-song, 37-minute masterpiece that contains just as many song snippets as it does actual songs. And while the recording quality on the GBV album is far worse than "suspect," that doesn't play into it for me.
Back on point: it's like Sgt. Peppers in that it's about the whole album. And, the sound of the thing WAS revolutionary at the time.
I was not there but those of you who where, how did it not blow your mind when you heard the SOUND of this thing coming out of your speakers in 1967? Did anything really sound like this before then?
Okay, it's not as good as Pet Sounds, which came out the year before, but...

Revolver IS that good! And I happen to love "And Your Bird Can Sing."

Todd ~ Yes, Pet Sounds is incredible and yes Pepper was very impressive for it's time. A Day In The Life was the true masterpiece that blew my mind when I first heard it pouring out of my huge speakers via a vinyl record and a Pioneer stereo tube amp. That last piano chord seemed to go on forever. The song was definitely a harbinger of great things to come.

Impressive for its time? Impressive for any time. Not like that sort of quality is reached often in this time right now. Not sure if anything equals it in this time.
