Custom labels on DVD's
I've heard that putting your own labels on your DVD's can cause them to not play in certain DVD players. Has anyone had this experience?

No, but glued on paper labels can come off in players and gum the works up. However, they make CD's less likely to scratch.DVD's, no, because the recording layer is in the middle of the disc sandwich, unlike CD's, which have the recording layer very near the label surface.
The only way I can see a label affecting a DVD, other than gumming up the player, is due to unbalancing it, if the label is not correctly centered. DVD tracks are a lot narrower than CD tracks, and on a crappy player, and unbalanced disk may wobble enough to be outside the stable tracking range of the DVD laser. Given that a lot of DVD players are a piece of shit (read, Chinese crap) nowadays, this could affect them.

Dan, you're like Cliff from Cheers, the guy who knew everything.

Hi Richard, I had troubles with stick on labels (long ago) and went with printable discs.
My wife produced a couple of videos and I duped and printed them using Epson printers. I also do our CD's on them. Epson includes an easy to use program to lay them out.
Are they as good as silk screened, professionally produced labels? No, but they're better, easier and quicker than using stick-ons. And depending on your graphic design talents, you can come up with a really sharp looking disc.
Epson disc printers
Tapes.com are right in Brooklyn, and they have all kinds of media. Not sure if the have a storefront so you could stop in and look, but it'd be worth finding out.
These are really inexpensive and good quality.
Verbatim DVD-R
I changed over to these when they came out with the glossy full hub and they take ink beautifully. Very high quality and to my thinking worth it:
JVC Glossy Watershield DVD-R
They also have colored tops (other than the standard white or silver), but it's a brand I've never tried and using the Epson software, you can do background pictures, solid color or gradient backgrounds anyway.
And they also have CD's, jackets and jewel cases at very reasonable prices.
Also if you want to make inserts, I suggest using HP Brochure paper
Good luck,
Glenn
