I never trust those "music biz resource" books. NO ONE accepts unsolicited material. So if they say they do, they are lying or up to no good!

Not true Larree. There are plenty of companies that will accept unsolicited material. The bigger problem is finding someone who will actually listen. You just have to know how to find them. Another problem is that many artists are too cheap or broke to pay for the information. The Indie Bible is a respected music industry informational book. I have it but I seldom use it because I have other sources to choose from. But for those who have no contacts or info it is extremely helpful. Much better than rip off organizations like Taxi. To find companies that accept unsolicited materials go to a "pay for listing" company like songlink or bandit. the info is not free but it is there. The best thing about these resources is that it lists people who are looking for artists or music for their artists right now. That is information that is invaluable to the aspiring songwriter or artist. I have had numerous songs signed through these music industry trade listings. Yes, it is true that there are a lot of bogusa listings out there but you just have to find the ones that are legit. The Indie Bible a=has a strong trackl record of legitimacy. Not the best but better than most.

message from David Wimble, the publisher of The Indie Bible:
Hi All,
Just to clarify, the listings are updated frequently. I've been doing this since 1999 and wouldn't still be in business if I sold outdated information.
Secondly, there are very few major labels listed. There are a few majors that welcome unsolicited material, and those we list. The labels we list are independent labels that welcome demos. Same thing for all other services - radio, press, distributors etc. If they are listed in the Indie Bible, then they are open to submissions. It doesn't make any sense to list services that don't accept unsolicited material.
For instance, our venue directory lists over 500 live music venues in New York City. Go ahead and type "live music venues in New York City" into Google. What you'll get mostly are lists from various online services and publications, many of them out of date.
To actually find the 500 venues as well as the styles of music they feature would take a person months.

Everyone I have ever met on the inside has told me different. No one who is anyone excepts any unsolicited material because access to the material is all one needs to prove to win a copyright lawsuit most of the time. That is why REAL industry people only accept songs from music attorneys.

There is other valuable info in the book that does not deal with the subject of demos.
