Taylor Swift
Did you see Taylor Swift singing with Stevie Nick on the Grammy's? Swift was out of tune on the whole song! It almost sounded like she was sining in a different key. She even sang off key on her own songs. This is a singer in desperate need of a vocal coach. When asked about the
performance with Nicks she claimed it was the fault of the sound engineer!!!!! (why? did he forget the Auto-Tune?) What a cop-out for someone who won the album of the year award! I was thrilled that Kelly Clarkson whom I think is great blasted Swift for blaming the soundman. The problem had nothing to do with the mix. It was Swift's inability to hit most if not all of the notes. She gorgeous but that's no substitute for talent although in the MTV world, looks are everything. I'm thrilled that Clarkson spoke up. People in the industry often bug her about her weight. They should just shut up and listen to the woman sing. She said Swift should have just taken responsibility for a performance that did not go as well as planned instead of blaming other people. Go Kelly!!!!
From Entertainment Weekly:
The last thing I want to do is ruin another awards ceremony for Taylor Swift. But there’s no doubt that someone was badly off-key during the version of Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon” that the country superstar just performed with Stevie Nicks at the Grammy Awards. And I’m afraid my money’s on Taylor. Moreover, I’m not the only person at the Music Mix who cringed at the sight of Stevie acting as Taylor’s backing singer on “You Belong To Me.” As one of my colleagues just emailed me: “Stevie Nicks is the ‘Gold Dust Woman,’ goddammit!”
But, hey, that’s just one, uh, music department’s opinion. What did you think of the Swift/Stevie collaboration? Do we owe Taylor a “Kanye”-esque series of apologies?
Taylor was WAYYYYYYYYYYYY off key. She was horrible. Stevie NICKS deserves better!!!!

I am not a fan of TS, but she is a kid, and has years ahead of her, she is where she is due to the huge marketing machine behind her,her youth, good looks, and resonates with the youth and has a freshness and clean living attitude about her, she is getting ripped all over in the media , maybe she deserves it, but so what if she did so, every one of us has sucked one time or another, lets face it , she does do a decent job throwing down reasonable songs with good hooks, she may not be the best singer, but show me one singer who has been perfect , never wavered, never lost pitch, never forgot their lines during a live performance , there has been many....

She's a big phony baloney ... manufactured with meat by products of the current music factory output.
She was supposed to be an unexpected "internet success" story.
Bullshit.
She's alway been part of the machine.

Good points Larree and Kevin, I agree. there are far better singer songwriters and more deserving, but this is reality , and that is why she is there and we are here. leave it as it is. ....celebrate music.

Sorry, Laree...she just does not have it live. I commented about this very thing on another board. Swift is always off-key when she sings live...always. I watched her sing at the concert for Haiti last week...same thing. She makes me cringe every time I see her perform. Her intonation is terrible,... It really grates on me. In the studio they no doubt do surgical operations to ensure she is in tune.
I think she is a sweetheart,, and I do like her songs....but she is just not a good performer live...period. But hey, being able to sing is just a small part of the package...I guess.
The Nicks pairing was pathetic....for many reasons. The song is a "High school" song...hearing Stevie singing about being in "The Bleachers" was pathetic.
Bad...very Bad...

I won't speak to that....who is "deserving" and who isn't. I am sure there are thousands of great artists who have busted their ass, but because the contacts, image and/or marketability is weak they go nowhere. Just a simple comment on her live singing ability. No need to defend her..I believe we are all entitled to our opinions. No need to give a pass, she has a problem singing live. When it is just her and her guitar...it is even more apparent. Lets see where she is ten years from now when her looks and innocence begins to fade...that will be the test. I like her fine....she writes her own songs and that is commendable....she has excellent hooks. She will be fine, she can survive a bit of critique....Just don't throw the soundman under the bus.

The producers are ultimately to blame for choosing the songs and the performers who crapped out..
.there are certain songs I never ever would perform, i have limited range and would do songs that had about a range of 5 tones, kinda.....honestly most rock songs are like that. I was really careful ,never tackled anything I knew I could not perform,. I would try, practice, but my vocal range just could not do it and would have loved to performed some of the classics I admired but stayed away from them. .just did what I knew I could handle
so I blame those who picked the songs, produced the show and as well the blame goes down the line.......I dont watch the Grammy's , ever.////so I guess I have no right to comment

Well then, she will ultimately have to live with that Jeff, I am sure she feels horrible and broken up, this is not the first time she has been getting it from all these writers in the entertainment industry......She will have to face up to it all, and ultimately become better from this whole experience.....how many of us can do what she is doing like I said, that is why she is THERE and we are HERE....

Both and Jeff and Kevin said it perfectly. She won the highest musical honors that can be bestowed on an artist. She should be held to a higher standard. Youth and inexperience are not excuses. I've worked with plenty of singers her age who sing on key and when they don't they make it sound right in their own unique way.
Swift just can't sing, period. I disagree that she's "done the work". The problem is she hasn't done the work. She was created by a machine like the Jonas Brothers were. If she really cared she would either go to the trouble of finding better keys for her songs or using a vocal coach. Yes, everybody sings off key once and while but to be a multi Grammy winner and sing off key on almost EVERY note on every song is unacceptable in my opinion. That was not a high school play. That was the freakin' Grammys!!" She may have worked hard at looking good and doing promotion but it's Auto-tune doing all the work on her CD's.
This is a perfect learning experience. It was a very calculated thing to have Swift sing with a legend. Her handlers wanted to make it look like Nicks was "passing the baton" to Swift. The stunt backfired on them!
I don't know who writes her songs but I would guess that she has a team of staff writers who either write or help to write her songs. She's where she is because of her appearance and sweet personna. This is what's wrong with the music industry!!!! This is why a great singer like Kelly Clarkson was almost dropped by her label: she didn't want to be manufactured. She wanted to look the way she wanted to look and write her own songs. Some assholes felt she wasn't "hot enough!"
Swift has been called the "voice of a generation" by her manager. Really? What a put down of a generation!
Hey, I don't hate the girl. And as Jeff said, there's no point in talking about who deserves what. God bless her and her Grammys. I just feel sorry for all the young artists who really write their own songs and really know how to sing them but don't have the "right look" or connections to make it big or even make a living.
Manufactured artists like Swift take all the oxygen out of the room and absorb all the investment that could go to other artists. They lower the bar and the standards of greatness we should demand.
Let's not cry for Taylor Swift. This is a tough business. When you play in the big leagues you're held to a higher standard. She's a wealthy woman and will become much wealthier over time. It kind of softens the blow of all this criticism. She's offended all the way to the bank.
As I mentioned, I don't hate her or begrudge her any honors. But the innocence is part of the act. She was engineered with the "innocence chip" because her creators felt it would make her endearing. She's a symbol of everything that's wrong with the industry and the reason why many good indie artists can't make it. I don't blame her. I blame those who invented her. She's a very lovely girl. They should teach her to sing.
Edit, I never said Swift picked the song or the pairing with Nicks. Bryon has a point about the producers being at fault on that one but Swift was singing flat on most of her own songs too.
I have compassion for her. But that's what you get when you follow your handlers blindly and don't question anything.

Whatever, we wont ever reach the pinnacle she has attained and the accolades she got, and perhaps indeed undeserving, it is the same with many many performers bands singers who did not work it and work their chops and develop their skills
I remember the Cars , recorded great in the studio loved their stuff, but sucked the hind banana live.so bad.....I have seen it happen before....but thankfully not too many times...
it looks bad , maybe it is time the whole industry got torn down for being so phony like kev said, he actually is right....
but I think Taylor is like a fresh breeze in this industry no matter what any of you may say here......she has adoring admiring fans who stand by her side and rather have her then some others that romp around singing crap junkyard shite and gettting press for all the wrong bloody reasons
Like Larree said enough already , leave her alone.....she will get better.
we are living in our own dream world here ...charting on a whooptie doo place whoo hoo, making peanuts while she charts in the real fake world and makes millions so there
