My best song yet?
... it has to be. Never in my life have I spent so many hours working on a single song, and never have I had to overcome more obstacles to get where I wanted to go, at least musically... but after many months of waiting, a failed collaboration with another artist and several hours of frustration and utter despair at times, here it is, the new Fighting the Undertow song from Grega and I. Originally it was supposed to be a collab with a French composer/guitarist by the name of Mr. CirKus last summer, but the timing never worked out. All the extra hard work was worth it and it feels really good to finally be able to share it... I feel RELIEVED!
The Circus Left Town
Enjoy!

Man ... that is one hard driven tune Jesse ... one hell of a circus act ... :)
I can tell you put a lot of work into it ... have you thought about findin' a Screamer ?...
.. or at least a big red nosed Clown for the act ? ...

Really frickin cool man, added it to the station. This song has movements, emotion, feel, it tells a story man. I really dig this. The changeover at 3:17 is genius and that riff manages to top the one from earlier in the song somehow. Very well done.
Peace

I thought it started monotonous, went into a hair band part, then started to sound somewhat like a progressive rock song. The only part that appealed to me a lot appeared a couple different times with some dramatic guitar, about 20 or so sec. each, enjoyed that. The ending with the baby room chimes was OK too. I just didn't find the main theme that interesting, I've heard other songs of yours that were quite a bit better. This kind of music works better when you have a singer, so it doesn't have to carry 5 and a half min. by itself.

Sam - I'm actually still debating lyrics for this song... at first it was a yes, but after Grega did his stuff I felt it could do without... but there still are some parts that could use some vocals I think... we'll see...
Thanks Otis! You guys get the tune and I'm really glad you liked it so much and added it to your station. Thanks a bunch! :)
Bluto I appreciate you listening... that must have been a challenge to get all the way to the end considering you didn't like it much. Props to you! I'm curious as to which songs of mine you'll feel are better...

Great energy in this track. I love what happens at 1:13 and 2:10 I assume those are bridges? This song could be the basis for a rock opera! Very tight, very good work all around.

Can't wait to hear it.
I'll hopefully find some time to hit the computer TONIGHT, after work at the day job & band practice...
Lookin' forward to what you say is your BEST yet, 'cause I DIG what you've done up to this point, as you well know, my good man.

Thanks Rich! Glad you like it man... yeah I like those parts a lot too, they are my favorite. I guess you could say they are bridges... that tie the "verse" and the part after the bridge together. IDK dude I just wrote riffs and tied them togther and this is what I came up with. The original stuff was wrote like 6-8 months ago, but the end of the song, the last riff with the piano... that was wrote like, last week... so it's interesting how everything came togther so well. (I think) Also I've been tweaking the mix and I'll have a better one up tomorrow.
Phlegmie! Hope you like it dude... if not it's cool don't think you have to say good things about it if it's not your thing... not that you would. Don't work too hard my man it's bad for you!

Hookay. Gave it a few listens finally!
Love the triumphant feel of the riffs and then the Reggae-like/Police thingee near the end...complete with "whoah-ohss.." for a sec...
Seems like you do what I do with titles to songs sometimes.... Mr. CirKus was s'pose to do the original version with you, and you ended up doin' it yourself, so you named it "the CIRCUS left town" and went with that theme for intro & outro...
Very diggable. Listened to it a BUNCH of times to make sure I wasn't just giving a biased review, and then the song TOTALLY grew on me. Amazing that your fairly complex changes & progressions can become so CATCHY.
The Outro makes me hungry for ICE Cream Treats from one of those little VANS though... Gotta agree with What others have said; some MORE vocals (either background or foreground) would only ADD to this tasty tune.
God, I really do love your tuneage man. Still jazzed that you might decide to do a Jesse Adams version of "Friends".
Welcome yet again to PHLEGM PHAVORITES ! I'm sure I'll have to move a couple of your killer tunes to the OVERPHLOW station this week, as you're hoggin' the phlegm-philled phav's airwaves right now....

Haha, sorry for hoggin' your airwavs Phlegmie... my bad. ;) I like it there!
Grega was actually the one who came up with the title but it was something like Circus Has Left the Town... then in a particularly stoned moment my bro actually called it The Circus Left Town which had a much better ring I thought.... and so it was. Little story there for ya. lol
Thanks for the station add as always my man, glad you like it. Dude I'm all for working on Friends, if you get a chance please man just send me the chords and lyrics. I love that song. BTW did you do the vocals on that?

Yeah, if you read the credits -- the LEAD Vocalist & some of the backup vocals are ME. Thought you could TELL by now, with my eclectic stylin'???
I didn't do the INSTRUMENTS though, and it was written on MOUTH guitar, at the time, so I'm not exactly sure on the chords! Just give 'em a listen, and come up with somethin' that sounds close to your talented ear. I gave the guitarists poetic license, as I usually do on collaborations....
ANYWAY, oh but to have YOUR jack-of-all instruments skills -- you must be like Hugh, and it comes fairly easy, eh? Due to time constraints, I'm gonna stick to MOUTH guitar for songwritin' and THE BASS for my instrument, and of course my FAVORITE: VOICE.
Have been workin' now and then on the DRUMS, but nothing worthy of recording yet.
I really do dig your stuff, and would LOVE to be able to take what's in my head & get it out there without always ending up doing collaborations....but there IS a lot of advantages to said collaborations....It hikes the DIVERSITY factor up a few notches, just by ACCIDENT.

I've looked at the credits a few times but I don't have the greatest memory sometimes and it's been a long week.
You got a real cool voice man. I wish mine sounded more like yours.
I don't know if playing different instruments comes easy necessarily, I just kind of always played on anything that was around when I was growing up so I've never just stuck to one instrument, but it's mostly guitar these days.

yup. I would say that is your forte= guitar. BUT I really have DUG your vocals, especially on TODD of Hop on Pop's tune that you covered.
Obviously, your work on DRUMS, has made your timing impeccable.
ROCK on man.
If there was ever a way to do it, with all the miles, and my current low income situation hindering; I'd LOVE to do a collab with YOU on guitars sometime...
OH YEAH THANKS for sayin' that about my VOCALS.... 'cause that's what I'm most proud of, and love to do the most.... so to hear from an amazing songwriter/guitar player/jack of all instruments like yourself, that my vocals are diggable, well, you KNOW that makes my night!
GOTTA get back to all the OTHER sites that my hopeful future Indie Record Label wants me to pay attention to, and hit that hay, for EARLY day job on Sunday....
Great bloggin' with ya, as usual man... I'll probably just throw the lyrics to FRIENDS up on IAC sometime this week or so, and let you know when they're in. That way I kill two birds with one stone, ya know!
