2?

maybe 1?

I was thinking about the current supply of endless songs in the world and wondering what would happen if people were only allowed to record songs that had something redeeming and original about them. Certainly this would be censorship and we don't want that of course but I am an avid listener and run into so many many many many songs that I just wonder "what's the point?" "Did the final product here really excite you?" "Did you feel you added to earth's musical heritage with that?"

Are these songwriters lacking in ambition or is just being a musicmaker the issue with quality not even something that's ever part of their outlook?

People get really excited about new songs, so they record them really fast and throw them onto the internet for all their friends to hear. There's nothing wrong with that - because we (listeners) have the power to turn it off after a few bars if we don't like it :)

However, the real test is to be able to listen to music years after it was recorded - and you are right, a lot of the songs out there will fail that test simply because the artists do not take the time to perfect their writing or their performances or their production... It's a sign of the times, the world of instant gratification, lowest common denominator art.

But not all artists subscribe to that world - there is plenty of really good music here at IAC, sometimes you just have to dig a little to find it, sometimes it makes it to the top ten of the genre charts!!

Personally, I hope mine stand the test of time...but we all have duds :)

I enjoy the whole process.... not all will be A+ material, but I try to refrain from posting trash as well. There are a lot of people just starting out, and I appeciate where they are in their journey. If they were not encouraged, they might quit...
I see no harm in posting to share and get critique.

If you dig deep enough, many substandard songs have reddemable qualities.

You do yourself a dis-service Sam!

So much depends on the objective - if one is "just writing songs" then whatever, write 'em, stick 'em up and enjoy. But if one is making music to sell it's a completely different ball-game...

I think .33% is the sweet spot.

Except for mine, of course.

Sam, don't put yourself down....your music is beautiful...and it is NOT substandard...it is GREAT stuff! You don't necessarily need expensive equipment today to get a good song...and soul is more important....all the fancy in the equipment in the world won't make a meaningless dud of a song a great one. It is YOU, the artist, who makes the song great!

Naw ... Beth ... I wasn't really putting myself down .... I love to laugh, and laughter at oneself is the very best kind ! ....

It's hard to see the humor in the written word sometimes ... :)

I actually DO like the word substandard as a chosen genre though ... I've never been one that has been accused of being NORMAL ... and I've never adhered to the rules of STANDARD ... so Substandard just sounds very poetic to me and I for one would be proud to carry that torch ... :)

Standard is just way to blah in my book ... :)

"Substandard" IS a good sub-genre. As far as music that 'shouldn't be recorded'- who makes that determination? Just because a song doesn't have something "redeeming and original" to you, doesn't mean that it doesn't have those things for somebody else. Music is, like any other artform- purely subjective.

Having said that, "Feelings" should NEVER have been recorded.
