How do you know when you've reached the twilight of your life?
I turned 50 this year. It seems relatively certain I'm not going to achieve any of my dreams. I suppose I'm there, d'ya think?

A few thoughts to ponder ....

The average final age is now (at least in America) around 85 years ... so when you really think about it, very few do anything before they are 20, you are a kid and school and youth activities ... so if you are 50 ... then you've actually only had 30 years to achieve your dreams ... so you still have 30 years or so left ... you should be smarter, wiser, and have had 30 years of getting to know what doesn't work ... and also the years between 20 and 50 are usually filled with things like daily family life ... after 50 you should have more time to spend on yourself ... so you are really just a kid, with lots of experience ...

Chasing one dream can be elusive ... so get yourself a thousand dreams ... that way you will surely make some of them ...

If you have one ultimate dream ... it would be a terrible thing to achieve it ... one wants to achieve it, not for the goal itself, but the feeling one would get from reaching that goal ... once you have achieved it, and got that feeling ... that feeling is no longer possible to achieve again ...

And the last thing is ... Do you know if you have been a part of some one else's dream ?... you possibly have been involved with someone reaching a dream, or reaching out for a dream ... and you may never know it ... and you could do that many more times ...

So ... you should maybe think about twilight at about age 83 or so ... :)

It's not about the destination. It's about the journey.

Is there ever a time when a person sits back and says, "I am there. No need to go any further."

I think we are always in longing. I think at the end of this life, we will all realize that every moment was precious, and it was never about the "goal." deb

When you start believing you've reached the twilight of your life.

Larree says I turned 50 last October. Fuck anyone who thinks I am done! Stand proud and ROCK!

Yep, look at Brian Wilson (who I saw during the summer) and Paul McCartney, both at 66, still out there rockin!

As long as you can physically do it. McCartney will probably die on stage giving a performance somewhere. Just a born performer.

John McCain felt pretty much the same as you 22 years ago. After 50 your mental age starts to count backwards so in effect he is only 28.

time flies when you're having fun
and life belies the dreams you had
when you were young
nothing's ever certain 'til
the day they pull the curtain down
and say that you are done

i'm 57...you'll have to ask someone older than me!

i just saw this woman who at the age of 50,or 50+, finally realized her dream of performing on Broadway. can't recall her name, once again, but I think if you goole it, it will pop up. maybe SuperPuss remembers.

if we give up on our dreams we may as well give up on life. if i have to carry my dreams to my grave at least i will have lived my life to the fullest. screw the rocking chair. that could be a cool name.

When to know if you have reached the twilght of your life.

When the penis that that used to stand and watched you wash your face
now drops in tears of misery to watch you tie your lace.

....

As Lenny Kravitz sings: "It ain't over until it's over"

That's probably not his original. Not over til the fat lady sings is another one I think.

So at the end, I hope to be saying something like: "Jeeze, is it that time already!?"

I'll end with another thought: Life is like a toilet roll, the less you have left, the faster it goes!

The dreams I may have occasionally achieved are not the dreams I had as a child, or a teen...or even in my 20s.

I think that life deals out a scenario that's really more interesting and miraculous than anything I could have dreamed up.
Of course the actual version is admittedly more painful than the version I proposed as a child..
but it's far more rewarding as well.

The discovery that being a member of civil society means focusing on the whole picture, not just my personal wants and indulgences but the little every day things that contribute to the greater good of society.
thats where it's at..Being a big tree that provides some temporary shade for the little sprouts so they can gain some root.

There's this magical line a friend of mine once told me, and it changes all the time but it means everything to me.

""the monster is too big and we cant defeat it, we are going to fail as all who have gone up against the monster have failed, but we will fail with flowers in our hair and a song on our lips!!, It will be a beautiful failure!!"

and thats what it comes to. Success in fame or fortune are NOTHING! those are hollow successes, they serve no one but you.
But the Impossible quests!, the challenge of putting a shattered wold back together again or momentarily soothing the worlds broken heart...
The challenge of stepping into a mean and jaded street with no weapon but a bit of kindness and eloquence.

huh?
As I get older, it's really the impossible that interests me, I'd rather be a beautiful failure than a typical success.
