Fear
Fear is one of the greatest paralyzing agents there is,
Fear stops some in their tracks and they become frozen, petrified, and find themselves embedded in a stony existence , its unfortunate isnt it, because they hide behind their insecurities, so instead of stepping out and tackling something they have not done , they turn away a shrink from challenges, too bad. of course their are psychological and perhaps influences that caused people to become like that, maybe as a child, but when you enter adulthood, one should work at changing that behavior, we are complicated creatures aren't we?
I know some incredible talent who say they are going to do something but never do, these people are unaware that they are cheating themselves, and others of course of sharing their talents in whatever area of expertise they have, or maybe they will never achieve that expertise because they run from challenges.
Fear, it is a painful way to live and find oneself in that state of mind

Fear has caused many should be stars to starve. It tramples over dreams and forces the fearful to miss their windows of opportunity. When or if you get a break, you have to be willing to step right in there and make it happen. Stage fright is one of the hardest things for budding artists to overcome. It is only natural as man's biggest fear is rejection. No one wants to be boo'd off the stage. But it happens. Learn from it and get better. I did.
I remember once I was touring in the South with an R&B band. We were booked at this hole in the wall joint in a place I had never heard of. I knew right away when I looked out at the crowd that it was going to be a tough evening. I mean, we were in shitkickerville and they were totally unfamiliar with our kind of music. Jeesh, we were lucky we got out of that place without being lynched. Our agent had the nerve to have us scheduled to play there again in the fall (3 months later). So, what did we do? We learned several country western songs and put on some cowboy hats, shirts etc. When we got back there they not only cheered our music (which was actually theirs) they were on the tables dancing, hooping and hollering! I think they completely forgot that we were the same band they had boo'd and thrown drinks at a few months before.
The reality is that we learned a valuable lesson by facing the fear to go back there again. We won them over and went back several times again. The club owner gave us big tips and wanted us to come back more often. In my book, we were terrible at country. But because we did something familiar, we were stars in their eye's. Which brings up another important thing to ponder. Always know your audience and be prepared to do other kinds of music. You may have to.
But never let fear stop you from reaching your goals. Never let naysayers steal your confidence and remember that music was meant to entertain. If they aren't feeling you, you ain't doing it right. Kind of like sex huh?
Another time I was touring California prisons. I was in a gospel band and our music was completely religious. We went to a notorious prison where the inmates were known to be a hard audience. I started hearing boo's before we had got completely set up. I was scared we were going to get shanked. But we prayed about it and started our first set. Before I knew it every man was on their feet clapping their hands and enjoying themselves. We visited that place once a year for about 8 years straight. I was convinced that being strong enough to face convicted murderers, robbers etc., made me strong enough to face any audience.
After I retired, I decided I wanted to go back to college to study music and recording engineering. I had always wanted to get some formal training but was always too busy performing and working to do it. So I was really scared because I was so old. Turned out I was the oldest guy in all my classes. For while there I kept hearing kids refer to me as Pops. I was like, damn, how did I become Pops? But I stuck in there and wound up graduating with a 4.0 GPA. If you want something in life, you just have to ignore your fears an go for it.
Just Do It!
