In Conversation With Raymond Porter, what it means to be human
I have just listened to a few Conversations With Raymond Porter, and it has been a cathartic event.

What struck me apart from the almost overwhelming reaction to both the sincerity and integrity of the artists was the great depth and feeling of what I could only describe as "humanness" what is it means, really means to be human.

Artists are inspired by many things love not least, when we listen to the songs the emotional reactions, buzz, inspiration. All these things are wonderful, I wasnt prepared for the direct honesty and sharing I found in these interviews. What they gave me more than anything else was a discovery or window into parts of myself.

I have gained much from these interviews. This post is a response and expressions of thanks to all those involved in sharing and giving so much of themselves.

Thats exactly it phlegm, they help you to better understand your own motivations as an artist. These interviews will be a valuable record as time goes by, a treasure indeed. IAC stands appart in the hummanity of its artists.

Look I know I have been going on about the humanity thing, its just a reaction to the crass comercial artificiality of the mainstream. The artists here are real.

Ray's interviews had a similar effect on me. After I did mine and had heard most of the others I started thinking about what we are looking for when listening to them.

Are we looking for hope that we will find a way to express our humanity in a way that will be meaningful to others? To listen to an artist who already has our admiration tell us how they got there is inspiring.

I ended up writing a song from the perspective of being interviewed by someone who
already appreciates my art. I think it says in less than three minutes what I would have liked to get across.

It is called "You'll Find A Way"

Here are the lyrics;

"Some one's insane but I know you love me cuz how could you not?
I could explain but it would take much longer than the time we've got

What's the farthest thought?
What's a work of art got to say
to an open heart needin' a kick start?
YOU'LL FIND A WAY

It's all fun playin' 'till some one starts takin' you seriously
I'm only sayin' don't take all my shit so literally

What's the farthest thought?
what's a work of art got to say
to an open heart needin' a kick start?
YOU'LL FIND A WAY
YOU'LL FIND A WAY"

here is the link http://iacmusic.com/songs.aspx?SongID=65739

I sent a copy of it in it's begining stages to Ray and told him that he inspired it. Since then I've worked on it a bit.
Give it a listen when ya get a chance. Thanks!

Nigels - as usual, your observations are astute and accurate. All of the interviews had a profound effect on me and made me more aware of the humanity that surrounds us at IAC but is rarely seen up close. Even listening to my own interview helped me understand more about who I am and what I'm really feeling. I think we owe Ray a debt of gratitude for all the hard work he put into the whole project. It was a massive undertaking in terms of his time and effort and it came off amazingly well.
The interviews of him by SRM were equally powerful and revealing.

Hi Ray

I am happy to support your work in any way that I can. I agree with farther time and the man with no band in that you are a saint like figure in your support of independant music.

I am really looking forward to the pHLeGm interview. What an amazing depth and sensitivity. Punk is as important today as it was all those years ago.

Its been a while and a crazy ride since I posted this blog. A couple of great songs and some beautiful lyrics from R porter

"I will see you smile and I will see you cry
I have seen your death and I see you reborn
breaking in the dawn"

Ray never ceases to amaze me with the depth of his soul, he feels deeply on many issues and is at times brutally honest. To work with him is to be at your best in many ways ethically, spiritually and musically.

In life we suffer, its how we relate to that suffering that makes us human. Great art requires great humanity and there are so many great artists and humans to be found here, many with the stories of loss and grief all converging into some great music.

I believe it is this quality of humanness that is the defining characteristic of independent music. Long may it prosper.

Get better soon Ray somehow find your way home.
