Too young to play guitar?
My sister's son Joseph is 8 years old and has been pressuring her to let him have an electric guitar for Christmas. I think he's way too young and way too small but I thought I'd come on here to ask what other's thought and if they'd had similar requests, maybe with other instruments?

No, there are scale guitars suited for small hands and frames. Age, within the limits of physical constraints is really only an issue when it comes to interest and drive to practice/play.
I have suited dozens of kids under the age of 12 with guitars over the years.
Some take, some don't, but as a general rule, you can tell pretty quick if it will take when the child shows the desire.

If you think they are too young to start at 8 I say no. Have you seen the youtube videos of some amazing little kids out there? Some play violin some play drums. There was at least one little drummer I forget his age but he was young got to go on stage with a major recording artist. In other countries starting young is common in training for even things like Olympics. If they want to try it why not but I don't condone those who force kids to doing instruments or activities the child is not interested in for the sake of the parents.

Thanks guys, apparently they had a visiting music teacher who let all the kids try out his electric guitar and they all want one now, like the noise it made. My sister is getting him a used scaled acoustic first to see if he has an aptitude and is serious about learning.

I've been around music since I can remember. My father played country music and my mom would even get up and sing sometimes.
I would walk around plucking the strings on the guitars on their stands as a tyke. My dad had an old "potato-bug" mandolin he would let me play with. My mom would let me dig out the pots and pans and I would make my own drum set.
Can anybody play spoons? I can.............

People that learn music at an early age seem to have a better intellect. Let the kid express himself and reward him for his efforts.

Great memories Duane, you just reminded me that Joseph was given a toy drum set at age 3 or 4 I think, he annoyed everyone on Christmas day and before New Years he'd put his foot through it after trying to climb on top.
