Part of Genius is...
...writing songs in major keys. Let's face it, that isn't so easy, at least not for a lot of us. That's something fascinating about McCartney's music: how often he could write a major key song that's cool.
I was going through my set list making sure I wasn't putting too much slow stuff in a row, and then I decided to look at it another way for awhile: how many major key to minor key tunes and where they fall. It was clear right away there just isn't enough majorish stuff there.
So then I started thinking about my own material I write in that light, and it's like I have albums that just back minor key tune against minor key tune.
That's too much angst, Mon. But making cool major key tunes is not the easiest trick.
Just something to ponder and my back mind will take it in and maybe a month or two down the line it will start to put out something. The songwriting part of me can't really be forced, but it can be suggested to, and then it will usually respond a few weeks later.

OK, you kind of lost me on this one - you're saying that it takes genius to write in a major key? So "Happy Birthday to You" must be among your favorites. And "Jingle Bells."
Maybe you just latch on to songs in minor keys, but that doesn't mean major keys are any more difficult. It's like saying that songs in D are easier to write than songs in G.
It's interesting, the major/minor dichotomy. Major is happy, uplifting, positive, while minor is angry, fearful, negative. Maybe you just find more fruitful material in the negative emotions. You wouldn't be the first.
But I don't think that genius is at all related to key signature.

So all my effort to write in the key of genius may be for naught...

Sometimes we (I) gravitate to certain keys due to the way they make us feel or the tonal colours , perhaps it reflects our personality or something. could that be a possibility
I know that D is one of my favs, so is B minor,. although I just wrote one in Db which I have never attempted before...I like Cminor and F and G for Blues and jazz
I dunno, I think it is a combination of factors......although I do mostly melodies and rarely venture into songcrafting songs lyrically. not my cup of groove
