Silver Hands
So I think this song might be done. I had the acoustic and vocal for a few months, but then when Matt came, we laid a bass and drums to it, and I just love his performance and all, but I spent hours mixing it trying to make right something that really can't be made quite right. See the snare mic is getting too much of his hi hat, so as I try to air out the snare more, I just get too much harsh hat.
But this is the performance, I just don't think any new magic is going down. So does anyone think this mix is gonna be okay now? It has some richness to it, I just wish I could grab that snare a bit more solidly.

I think that the mix is pretty good, although I do hear what you mean about the snare/hi-hat dillemna.
Have you considered maybe overdubbing a second snare (and ONLY snare) track to get that TRUE isolation? Just hit it when he hits it, or even easier (and sneakier) hit it just ONCE and then copy and paste that there snare hit over when he hits it.
Keep the original track. Just add a new track of solo snare to firm up that original, and then mix it up until it sounds sweet to your ears.
Or hell, even use a drum machine to the same effect. Or a tin can. Or whatever...
Just a thought...

Yeah, I think recording a track of just snare is a good idea. I'd play the whole thing through though instead of copying one beat - you'll get more heart that way. Haven't had a chance to listen to the track yet - I'm at work. Maybe tonight.

I guess I'm just reluctant to mess with his stuff, but it may be the way to go.
Sometimes I listen and this sounds done, other times I think the snare is too thin.
Just another very strange lyric, very strange song, but lately I can't help the weirdness. That's just how they come to me. I think this next album will be pretty out there, but that's just the way it goes right now, it's the only kind of song that comes to me, and I am aware they are not exactly accessible, but when they write themselves, I just roll with it.
Thank you guys for checking it out and the advice, and also thank you to the station that is playing it...

Well, damn, Bob...
By recording a separate track of snare, you aren't messing with a thing. Not erasing anything or even messing with the mix at all. KEEP that mix that you have, and then see what that overdubbed snare can (or can't) do for it.
Maybe it works, maybe it don't. And if it doesn't, just mix that snare the hell out and you still have that soft, warm mix that you had before with no harm done. But at least you would have tried something.
Again, just an opinion.

Well, I did another mix. Haven't added anything yet, but maybe this new mix brings it out. I think maybe it does....

It's not a shockingly different mix, but the snare is definitely a bit more prominent than it was in the original. And yet, it still sounds warm and soft.
Nice.
Are you happy with this one?

Hey Todd,
Glad it translates to whatever you heard it on. As to whether I think it's right, it's kind of early to say. I mean, I heard it in the truck on the way to work, I heard it on the ipod after I did it last night, and it seems decent but maybe muffled?
But maybe it's good to go. I hate to labor over things too long because the many many years of experience doing this has shown me that for me things usually get worse. I know it shouldn't be that way, but it really is that way. I lose my way, and the natural magic gets tangled in a knot and I get frustrated.
So I hope I can check out on tis one now while it's still breathing. I used to work them truly to death.

First of all, it’s an excellent song. I love the vocal on it. And the guitar sounds very good, as usual.
Don’t get too hung up on the whole snare/hat thing, neither one is anything close to the focus of the song. It’s about the song. To be honest, I’m not sure I’d want the snare to have more snap or air or anything. It has a nice character all its own as is. Sometimes people try to be too conventional and consequently they try to capture conventional sounds without thinking about whether it actually needs to be conventional. I like it when elements have different characters to them. It will leave room for that great snare sound to shine on the next song on whatever album this ends up on. In this case the drums have a certain depth of character that the guitar and vocal can sit on top of. The drums don’t get in the way so the listen can pay attention to the real elements that make the song. And I love the song Bob.
