A Surprisingly Effective Yet Cheap Mixing Tool
i-pod headphones.

For instance, I have found in the last couple days that they are my best tool for hearing the illegal bass down in the too low to hear on some systems range. You don't hear it at moderate volume, but if you turn it up beyond that, the headphones give in and make a very funny sound like a speaker about to burst (which is what it probably is). It picks that lowest of low up better than my Truth monitors, better than the flat studio headphones, better than the car speakers.

But I've also found i-pod headphones to be good for mixing just in a general sense. I've found that if I can get that mix to feel good on the head in those things, the mix is generally pretty close to done in all the other things, too.

I thought I was the only one.

I routinely use them as an additional check to make sure things are in the ballpark.
