Set List for Tomorrow Night
Not in this order, they're kinda grouped by similar types. Kinda nervous. It's outside and it'll be cold. I cut the fingers outa some gloves. My voice feels a little at that place where I could lose it, and so I'm not at ease, but many times it feels that way and all goes well. Haven't played out since about a month and a half, and before that it had been a few months. Gig season starts tomorrow...

As you can maybe see, I don't do requests very well because I don't know most of what people request...

Did I miss something, or are you actually playing a 4-hour set?!?!
And... none of your own?
What did I miss?

I want Bob Elliott to come to Chicago and play a show here... of all your OWN tunes, please!

IT's just 6:30 to 10:00. I have to play them really fast to get them all in. (Or maybe I don't need to get them ALL in...)

I should play more of my own, but I do have TEN of my own in that list.

I like to do covers on acoustic because it's really a creative thing to change the songs around to do it your own way with just your voice and your acoustic. I'm pretty into that. There are ten Elliott songs, which is more than any other artist I'm doing.

I sorta feel like my songs have to compete with those ones in the show to get space, and those are a lot of good songs to compete with.

Great set list! I'd see this show in a second. Your own songs fit nicely where you put them. Interesting pacing too, starting out reggae - that'll set a cool vibe while people are still coming in, getting settled. Don't know what the place is like, but sometimes after people have had enough to drink and they're into what you do, you can throw more originals in. Can't please everyone, so you ... got to please yourself. Wish I could be there, bruddah.

Oh no, Tom, I didn't play 'em in that order. It's just a list of what I was ready to play (in theory ready).

I did play most all of those songs last night. Went pretty well, but I think there is not a thing good about cold when playing a gig. It ain't too good when you're breathing out vapor. I would say the gig started at about 58 degrees and progressed into the low forties. I had one of those outdoor heaters by me, but it seemed to be ignoring my fingers. The audience had fire pits.

Ever play with gloves that have the ends of the fingers cut out? Well, I'm telling you that it can be done.

Also, my voice has been feeling like I would lose it for a week, and I really needed more rehearsal, so I was feeling pretty gloomy for the first half, but you know, you can't let the dark clouds take over when you are there putting out your show. I pushed on and it got better . By the end of the night people were talking about being moved, so I did what I'm paid for.

But I am sure glad I have more rehearsal time now, and the next gig is indoors and all the next outdoor gigs should be warmer.

I do love to play live even though it is a hard thing to pull off three and a half hour shows...

tthat is impressive Bob. I have to get mine happening again, I used to be more organized and had a set list , but more a song list and have not been faithful to staying with the program of late, well for awhile and when i get calls to do something I just fly by the set of my pants so to speak but always deliver. I need to get back into a proper structure,,,slacked off , got lazy or unmotivated I guess, but other more important pressing issues have ensued , but we should always have time to play, it is something I have all my students do, and develop and maintain their songs and practice it hee in my studio teaching policies and expect them to rise to the occasion if and when i pull a surprise in class performance presentation

I have them all maintain previously performed songs and request that they imcorporate it at home every two weeks where they sit down and play their songs consecutively

the moral
practice what you preach

Hey Bob, I totally sympathize about playing in the cold. Remember that place in Tahoe I used to play? It was like playing in paradise scene-wise, but I remember my fingers not wanting to function. And the strings seem to cut more into your fingers. Never tried those gloves with the cut out fingers, but it sounds like a great idea. Would make the neck feel awfully thick though, I imagine. Hope you have a great gig season.
