Being a conductor isn't what it's all cracked up to be.....
It's Thursday morning and I had a long rehearsal last with the Orchestra I conduct just outside of Paris; They're pretty good and because they're getting better (maybe I have something to do with that), they're starting to get big heads. So, we gave this really well received concert a couple of weeks ago that I really had to push hard for them to get it together....but in the end it finally worked.
So, now we're doing this creampuff programme in June (Pops stuff, which I absolutely hate, although I managed to weed most of the worst stuff out....) and I thought "Okay, things will be cool. We can just coast through this one and it'll be fine..."
WRONG. They WANT me to keep the pressure on. They want me to stop them every two measure and make them do it right. So, after one "cool" rehearsal, I'm back to cracking the whip. And they're really happy about it. Go figure.
So, not only do I have to conduct this dreck. I have to take it apart and put it back together again, examining each piece in detail before I put it back in.
I suppose it's all music, but I'd really rather be conducting something else...

Well, you've got a point there, Scott. I just hate wasting my time on music I hate since there's so much good music out there....and life is short.....
But, I'll get my payoff next Fall when we start the series of concerts which has some really neat pieces on it that I've wanted to do for a long time!
Until then, I just grit mah teeth!
