Kanye? Genius?
Could somebody please explain to me why people keep referring to Kanye West as a genius? I mean, it can't be his music because I have never really been impressed with it. Nor, can it be his public persona. What has he done academically that warrants this? The dude says and does stupid things on the regular. So, what is it? Why would anyone say that idiot is a genius? I am perplexed by this!

Cause he knows how to use Twitter like Trump, any one that can do that effectively is a marketing genius and if used with a twist of assholeness, well that helps out immensely, in order to be successful in the music industry these days, it is totally and completely about manipulating social media, and if you can use the butthurt technique and fuck with peoples head, you got it made. it gets people talking even more, that folks is the bottom line

lets face it, he been around a long time. so he could actually fart, release it, well not the flatus ,but sample it, and have a hit song, wouldnt matter , he had some pretty good stuff back in the day you know,. he has a pretty high profile had some issues back awhile of course and was a bit of a mental case, he has come through that. his little tiff with legend was kinda manufactured, kinda. in a way. cause the next day they were partying it up!!!. so yes, he is a genius, maybe not to some, but if I could get a little of his mojo on twitter, i be a 1000aire. that be great!! cheers to Kanye,

I couldn't believe it when I first heard him, after all the hype. It was literally one of the worst acts i'd ever heard.

I concur with that Scott and I can't help but wonder how our standards for giving someone the title genius degraded to how well they can say salacious and stupid things in order to drum up attention. Children do things to get attention. But I can understand Bryon's perspective on this, after all, he, is a promoter. Of course that is genius from a promoters point of view. I bought two of his CD's. Played them both once and never wanted to hear them again. Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and maybe even Michael J. were musical geniuses imo. Kanye West? A good hustler, decent rapper but not a genius. Definately mentally challenged though.

It's "The Emperor's New Clothes" story.
Agree he's like Trump in self promotion. It's like if you say something enough times people will start to believe it.

About Kanye West,
Half of the people can be part right all of the time
Some of the people can be all right part of the time
But all of the people can't be all right all of the time

bp deignan - could not agree with you more! And taking it out of the realm of music .... My frame of reference for the category of genius is Albert Einstein, Jonas Salk, Frank Lloyd Wright, Edith Wharton and people of that sort. Kanye is the most ordinary of people and not even smart enough to really comprehend the meaning of the word genius, I suspect - not blaming him particularly .....as you say, you can start to believe your own hype. But the frustrating thing for me is, if someone like Kanye or Trump sat down beside you at the bar one Happy Hour, how long would it take for you to realize they were totally bullshitting .... hmmm.....

Bullshit baffles brains anyday, so there you go. how the hell do you think people get anywhere in life. BS, Baffling, deceit, lies, this is the real world. everyone plunking their thoughts here has BSed, lied, used deceit, it is how we are wired, lets get a grip

I don't always have a firm grip, but I have a grip for sure. I don't speak for anyone else, but I haven't relied on bullshit in the longest time, and it's a habit that was really hard to break. I recognize it in others, and there are others that I recognize for being for real - that doesn't mean 100% honest all the time, just basically telling it like it is as best you can. I'm never going to accept that sincerity doesn't exist or matter.

yah, sub consciously it lurks and catches us unawares, I am certain Dolores you have a better grip on it then most, including me, although anyone, and everyone in the political realm at one point or another gets trapped in this BS lying thing, they may start out with good intentions, but because of how the machinery of government is set up, no matter where, when and how, or what country , they get snared by the traps within their own agenda and their party line, this applies to most anything and everything human endeavor ever undertaken
Yes we may have good intentions, and perhaps some here are better at recognizing their proclivities and weaknesses and have overcome those tendencies that bring us down , but there is no one here or any where who is a paragon of virtue, even though we may think so

Well, in a nutshell, you answered the question succinctly ,one has to be an entertainer, that is all of it mostly, we are not anything if we cant entertain, cause that is what it is all about, so right on and thank you for bringing that to our attention, I have always had this point in mind, one has to be an entertainer, a great performer and a decent ok musician. people want to be entertained, and that is what Trump, Kanye and anyone worth their salt has, the ability to bring people what they want to hear, something beyond the music that transcends everything else and is the energy, the enthusiasm and the connection in whatever we do. ENTERTAINMENT FOLKS. if you dont have the MOJO, you aint got NOTHING. I have seen half ass musicians blow people away with their ability to ENTERTAIN and PERFORM. so put that in your Fing pipe and smoke it you KANYE HATERS LOL

How about a great marketer and self promoter Neil diamond is no singer but writes good songs and knows how to entertain same with Seger Springsteen or Dylan. Bad singers but lay down their own brand of folk and rock .probably only real genius in there is Dylan. I guess it boils down to personal interest and appeals to us individually . We are all gifted here and each of us as musicians have a special ability the only difference is we have not had the same degree of success or fan base although what we do have is a self awareness of the talents we do have and to continue our journey doing the best we can and there are a lot of good songcrafters singers and performers in our midst cheers to us!!!

Yeah, totally ... Being a great promoter or a great entertainer or both is a great talent. And you make another good point - maybe an artist you relate to personally because of their sound is genius to you in a way someone else doesn't get. And definitely even geniuses have their ups and downs :) I just think it's really important to not give in to the "dumbing down" of everything. It's dangerous and it's being done on purpose by some people. There is still a big difference between a lie and the truth and these people are trying to blur it for the sake of money and power.

Yes Dolores , we live in a Dumbing down type of society. The fellow that does my artwork on songs I release to certain places says the same thing, its a shame we are as a species devolving. going backwards and the scary rise of tribalism is taking hold of many countries and peoples mindset. But then again this issue is a combination of various things , including the swarms of people coming from various countries that is causing real challenges here, not so much in Canada, but it is getting there, i look at Sweden, what a disaster. there are no go places throughout that country where the cops will not tread. that is a whole other subject. I have strong views here, so I am stopping right now, cause it gets political and my mindset and views will piss people off. and it aint the right platform for sharing here

He has a few good jams and he’s done some creative stuff. I wouldn’t say genius. I can’t listen to him for many songs in a row. Many acts in hip hop I like a lot, lot more. I love hip hop.
But Neil Diamond can’t sing? I’m not a huge fan, but I’d say the guy can clearly sing.

Neil Diamond, i wont classify Diamond as a great singer or a good singer, to me, he has a range of five tones. so do many rock singers. as a singer, he does not compare
to someone who can really lay down the chops, he has a easy listening range, but aint awesome, adequate, I have seen him numerous times, my wife loves him. me not so much, I like him. but not blown away

Yeah, when it scomes to Hip-Hop I think that Tupac was super intelligent and knew how to work a crowd into a frenzy. Biggie had an infectious style with very clever lyrical cadences. Snoop and Dre made Gansta Hip-Hop an international sensation while Diddy made millions by putting his own slant on records that had already been made. Then, there is Eminem, a man who came from no where and took the Hip-Hop crown for a while. All are super intelligent probably more so than Kanye. For me, stupid is as stupid does. The way he acted at the Grammy's that time was unbelievable. Then, his clothing line looks like crap that no one would be caught dead wearing. Plus, this last fiasco where he claimed that slavery was a choice that we made for 400 years. On top of that, he recently had a similar elective surgery to the one that killed his mother. All of that and so much more points to a person who is in need of serious therapy. But nothing about him is genius. Not even his marriage to the pass around chick. Yeah, she's pretty but her fame comes from laying on her back and making home movies of it. I'm just not impressed with him or his entourage. For him to try to act like he speaks for Black people is ridiculous. His views don't even come close to mirroring those of the Black community. As a matter of fact, his radical train of thought is not conducive to those of the "woke" generation. His overt Trumpisms are foreign to his own people. He is a man out on an island and if he ever falls into the water the sharks will eat him alive. Genius? No! Not even smart!
