Happy Memorial Day
Every memorial day I get up and try to remember the names of all 32 men I lost under my command in Vietnam. This year I was able to remember 28 names and had too look up the other 4. Went out and did my martial arts workout and caught myself thinking about the Little Torso Boy. Those of you that know my music well have no doubt listened to the song I wrote about him a while back (currently on my IMP page). Anyway, I said a prayer for him and my men this morning. Gave thanks for being alive and then began to remember those turbulent days of war.
Someone saw me working out with the sword and said Wow! That's pretty good! Happy memorial day. I thought "How oxymoronic is that? Saying happy memorial day to someone who is mourning is kind of a strange thing to me. Shouldn't it be "Sorry for your loss" or something like that. But, were humans and most times there is no logic in the things that we tend to do routinely o automatically. We don't think about those things, We just do them or say them because it is what we were taught was best. Hmmm just a few thoughts I had this morning as i thought about the bloody battles and lost soldiers. Plus, the little torso boy. I teared up quickly while thinking about him and the sight of his half severed body laying in the dirt. Yeah right, happy memorial day! Just don't think about what it is truly about. It is not a happy thing to remember. Think twice before saying happy memorial day to someone. Just saying.................Stoneman
