long attention span theater
(note: this is prolly a huge time waster, I have a big bag of nothing. At the very least, it may give you, dear reader, a good reason to kick me in the nuts and dogpile without mercy. Let's see. K?)
Many years ago I was an avid "indie" listener, probably 80% of what I listened to was indie that I had heard on the old MP3.com site and weekly streamy/chatty shows that I think were hosted here (awesome times!). During that period I either bought, won, or was gifted quite a few CDs. As I ease back into this deal (never again will the "old" jingo be fully realized, what we have here is "what remains", but I am trying to work my indie head a little bit) I have been scribbling down CDs to get as soon as I either remember my Paypal password or set up a new one.
I am kinda dimwitted, one thought gives rise to another like the moon follows the sun - so as I looked at this short list it made wonder why I haven't listened to the "old" stuff in years. What the hell was I doing? As I went down memory lane in the Wayback machine I realized that a very odd pattern had emerged in my listening habits - I had become some kind of compulsive head case, it seems.
After the MP3com daze I became a talk radio listener for a while. I didn't care, and still don't, about CONTENT, I was concerned with the STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS (what a moron I am!). Did they do bits, fire off drops, have schtick? Rush was the same as Howard Stern was the same as sports radio was the same as church talk - I didn't care what they said, but how they said it. This went on for a while, there was no music. My earball intake was all talk.
Next was Olde Tyme radio dramas - Dragnet, Lone Ranger, Superman, X Minus 1, Innner Sanctum, The Shadow, whatever. This replaced talk, and once agian, no music.
When I did return to listening to music in a "personal" setting (read: the 2 to 3 hours a day I spend commuting the 26 miles to the office, all alone in my big crew cab pickup, kicking Mother Earth's ass with my big carbon footprint) I had become a real one trick pony (no offense to Ed). For instance, at one point I listened to The Cult for weeks (Sonic Temple is the fave), Riot (Fire Down Under is awesome), the black and white BOC, Iron Maiden Revisited, the Diothon, Judas Priestpalooza, Motorhead's 5 disc Stone Deaf Forever! for about a month (Killed by Death!) and then the big mother Black Sabbath / Deep Purple total immersion project that took several months.
The weird thing is that I don't ever recall being bored. I noticed today that I had three Corrosion of Conformity CDs loaded in my truck and that I had been listening to those, Tony Martin's "Scream" and the Tony Iommi/GLenn Hughes "Fused" CD, over and over, for weeks, and never really noticed. Slot 6 was empty - never noticed.
Another odd thing is that I didn't used to be such a heavy music type, When I was young (gazillion summers ago) I did listen to it, but there was a lot of other stuff in there. Now that I am an old(ish) type (about ready for those kids to GET OFF MY LAWN!) seems like all I choose is a bit heavier/darker and I seem to obsess on it.
In a social setting I will trot out just about anything that falls even loosely into a "rock" category or listen to whatever a host has to offer. It's just when I am "by myself" that I cling to these odd patterns. They don't seem to bother me, in fact, even though this has gone on for years now, I never even noticed I was doing it until a few days ago.
So: is this normall? sicko? onset of "set in the ways" oldmanitis? all that X finally catching up with me?
Also - notice that I love the paranthetical? WTF? And question marks?

I go thru phases like that too. I listen to a lot of sports talk radio. I try to only listen to music when I can fully concentrate on it. Right now I'm suddenly in a hard rock phase, I think the next few songs I do will be in that realm.

I believe the medical explanation is as follows:
1) Heavy metal is corrosive and deadly
2) You've been willingly exposed for years, never mind the carbon monoxide you inhale daily from your big ass carbon footprint.
3) Your bad habits are finally catching up w/ you
4) Your brain is subsequently deteriorating
In order to counteract the detrimental effects, you need to increase your "Air Supply", which can be obtained via "Yanni"ing
A caution to pre_scription though ...
Too much "remedy" can induce sudden impulses to turn your vehicle into the path of oncoming 18 wheelers.

That's good advice, Kevin - I am going to see if Air Supply and Yanni have some box sets so I can obsess over those for a while. I will let you know how that turns out, unless, as you warn, I decide to get cross ways with traffic. If that happens, I shall haunt your ass. Real hard, too.
FT - rock out! I did enjoy the Coloured Vinyl (is that spelled write? spellon iz harde)work - and I know you are very happy with it. However, I always liked the stuff like Flounder / Rock for the Sake of Rock etc. Also - one question that I don't think I ever got an answer to - what do the dates on the cover of the Father Time CD represent? You prolly told me before, but the last I recall is that you said I should be able to figure it out - well, you were wrong. I still haven't figured it out.....

Jingo, it's so long ago I barely remember but the first one was when the Beatles first played on Ed Sullivan and I'm pretty sure the 2nd one was the date of the Sex Pistols' last concert (with Sid) which was in America. Did you ever figure out what the backwards masquing at the end of Rock for the Sake of Rock said ?
Hey you need to hear Soul Pinata and Blameless which are in the same vein, total rockers, also All Along, the version w/ WeaponX. I'm pretty sure all those came since you were in town. I think they're all on my IAC Father Time page now.

Thanks, Time. I am listening to the WeapX version now - I also see you did a track with Rally (the Scottish guys?)
Also - when I first turned up, I looked at yourpage but I swear it was blank, just the lava lamp. I read some of the "Scott" blogs, saw that you had been busy apparently, then the CV project popped up - I thought maybe you had pulled the FT stuff. Anyway the "new" All Along is great, Soul Pinata on now.
Real actual true story: at the end of the long Black Sabbath / Deep Purple deal (see above) I started listening to the Corrosion of Conformity stuff that is STILL in my CD player. They employ a little bit of buzzy trippy sound, which got me to thinking about the psychedelic / summer of love era. That made me think about you, your stuff always seemed to be influenced a little by that era. So, I googled you and landed on your Jefferson Airplane thread, kinda funny, huh?
The Rally track is on now, it's got to be the Scots. Damn good track!

Thanks ! I still wonder to this day what would've happened if mp3.com hadn't pulled Rock for the Sake of Rock in the midst of all that insanity we stirred up. Indie music may have gone national by the time that crested, possibly. heh
