genaral public = dopes?
Is it just me, or is the general public comprised of nitwits?
I have never been able to talk even one other person into checking out ANY sort of indie music site AT ALL. Several years back I was a big fan of a now dead site - people hated to see me coming because they were afraid I was going to subject them to "more of that internet crap". Nobody wants to be the internet crap guy, at least not for very long. It's frustrating.
So - I gave it up, site died anyway. No biggie.
I have a lot of CD's from back then. Many are kinda homebrewed and sound that way - no problem for me, it's HONEST music made by a REAL HUMAN. A lot of people can't seem to get into that. I also have several that are very well produced, radio friendly and stick to a genre quite well. Nobody wanted to listen. Foriegner 4, they'll listen to that - hell yeah. But If 6 Was 9? Never heard of them - must be some of that internet crap - turn that OFF, play some Journey. And get me a Bud Light while you are up.
Porn - they will all look at porn, damn straight. The internet is the portal to all things porn. Music? not so much, iTunes and Pirate Bay - but they don't want any of that "crap" they never heard of. Hey - here's a thought - listen to it, then you have heard of it.
Just a rant. I came home in a very bad mood, locked myself in my office (very loosley defined!). CDbaby finally got a download fixed for me (nice folks) so I listened to Bob Elliott. Saw where Jeff AM had a new tune, gave it a listen. Threw up a thread and got all kinds of ideas about stuff to listen to, very gratifying. Through a roundabout path I wound up listening to a Black Sabbath live recording I have never heard before and bought a "Spirit" album. Got my musical rocks off for sure.
I try to tell my stinky General Public bretheren that if you want to hear some new stuff, get some new ideas, turn on the confuser - try to stay away from porn if you can - you can really get your entertainment bang for the buck up and flying (ok, at least arrange the windows so that porn is down in a corner). They won't listen, because I am the internet crap guy. I don;t care, if they want to be stuck in Clear Channel hell that's their business. Have some Journey and Bud Light - kick ass mofos.

Drucking Funks....
I think most people (the GP) are as stupid as fence posts and about half as useful.
But I still love em,
But I dont even bother trying to get the GP to listen outside the lines, I go out and see indie bands and singer songwriters and open mics, thats the bulk of my intake of independent stuff.
there are 30 or 40 indie writers on the internet that I pay attention to, really much fewer than that that I pay close attention to.
I also like a lot of signed bands and songwriters..I mean, there are some really really great songwriters who also happen to have gold records and and mansions..And there are a lot of amazing musicians who took a label deal and are just working people creating the best music they can. I dont begrudge any musician who takes a deal if it comes along, but that deal is no indication of their ability as a musician.
But really it takes a special sort of freak to haunt these sites and look for music and ideas..
Those are the lovely geeks, freaks and weirdos that I like best, sad that our numbers seem to dwindle rather than grow..

I'll grant that the GP is smarter than me in some ways, dumber in others.
I'm just trying to find the right balance. :^D
Numbers are numbers ...
What's curious is that we're told affiliations lift numbers to lofty, then reality softens lofty to paltry.
The swings are unexplained. Unexplained fosters questions about WTF???
Bear in mind that the fact that the numbers fluctuate between bot and reality is a reflection on the honesty inherent in the intent of IAC programming.
I watch them go from 200k to 2k ... and don't really give it much thought. The reality of IAC plays happens ... and would be unchanged no matter the accuracy of the counter.

I don't give the general public any such credit.
I'm intelligent, and I know a handful of other intelligent people, a few who are smarter than me, I know 2 or 3 that I consider to be geniuses, and such people are very rare.
I don't like it, but that's the facts.

It gets more weird when one considers intelligence against income.
I know a LOT of unaware people who make a LOT of money ... and yet ... they're still stupid.

Intelligence against income is a very bizarre subject.
The two often seem inversely proportional.
I have a theory that has to do with fear based economics and hoarding. At the moment I'm to tired to go into it, maybe I'll get all riled up tomorrow.

Jingo, I appreciate all you have to say, and sadly it is true. There is a small percentage of people who like to discover new music for themselves. Most people need force fed and lead to the table as it were.
I always get a kick out of American Idol, although the singers are no doubt talented the adoration from fans that did not know them a month before proves the point.
They are on T.V, their friends like them, and suddenly they are stars worthy of adulation. For the most part they are just Karaoke singers during the shows run.
Most original music to be appreciated, needs listened to a few times, this is true of all songs.Unfortunately most of us wallow in anonymity. Our songs disposable commodities in a manufactured, instant gratification society.
It is nice to read a post where someone appreciates what is happening under the surface where few choose to look. Thanks for that!
As for money and intelligence....many people are "street smart"...this often lends itself to making money. Street smart people can be complete idiots in many areas... However, highly Intelligent people can be socially retarded :)

Are indie artists much different than the general public? They can't seem to find one of their own to promote to good effect.

Bluto said "Are indie artists much different than the general public? They can't seem to find one of their own to promote to good effect."
Good point Bluto
There are few of those types of special individuals about , as you well know : ), those are the ones who are the real advocates and true lovers of good music and willing to sacrifice on the artists behalf, even if it is to their personal and financial detriment at times.
It just takes so much investment of time, energy, dedication, untiring drive and that other important aspect ah oh yeah money..
So the indie artist is left to fend for themselves awash in an ocean of other artists who are splashing about , sometimes frantically and they are in a way treading water before they give up and drown in frustration and despair, as they gasp saying why didn't anyone notice me ....
And of course the promoter survives, as he looks from his safe abode scanning the horizon for another aspiring artist willing to stick it out for the long haul.
Musicians should not be such a whiners and bitchers and expecting a miracle to happen. it is not always the best musicians and greatest talent that makes it. Sometimes indie artists just dont get it. So indies and for that matter any business will be successful -Deliver the goods, stay the course, plant the seeds of building a grassroots following and be accessible to your fans or customers. I could go on and give the principles of getting to that promised land, but most of you here already know what it takes.......
But at times Indies sometimes want things they cant have, not just yet , it may happen , but not until until they prove their worth, but sometimes life is unfair and a Britney Spears appears
