A Modest Proposal
OK, here's the deal - people are always putting musicians down for "selling out" and letting their songs be used in beer commercials and car commercials and so on. And since, I've decided, no one really pays much attention to lyrics (people just want a cool sound) my proposal is this:
We all start writing really groovy, catchy songs that are musically first rate, but with lyrics about our favorite products. I say, if it's a great song it doesn't matter what you write about. So if all at once there were all these great songs (I'm not talking jingles, I mean full-on songs) about Cherry Coke or Guinness stout or Black and Decker tools or Haagen-Dazs ice cream (the banner ad to my right is calling me) and then we catch the attention of Madison Avenue and the advertisers all buy our songs and make us millionaires. (BTW, Haagen-Dazs has this great limited edition flavor called Bananas Foster - you should check it out).
So we wouldn't be selling out - we'd be beating them to the punch and advertising products we believe in anyway. It's a new business model - maybe it needs some fine tuning, but it just might work. Coming up with things worth writing about is many musicians' weak point. This takes care of that problem.
