Hey Richard,
IAC really needs more people like you who give an honest critique. I find that people are afraid of stepping on other people's toes. I know I'm not Lennon and McCartney, but I looooove writing music and every now and then I write something memorable. I totally welcome criticism - it helps me hone my craft.
I agree that 'The Wrong Way" is a little light lyrically (catch that alliteration?) but I'm glad you found it fun, just the same.
Right now I'm thinking a lot about the balance between meaningful lyrics, (which are of great importance to me) and groovy sound. I feel that I've written some really beautiful words which were just not carried correctly by the music. My dream is to write something which is interesting to musicians on a cognitive and academic level, interesting to writers on a literary level, interesting to listeners on an emotional level, and interesting to myself on a psychological level. Lofty goals, I suppose.
Bob Elliott and I are doing some great experiments right now, so stay tuned for our results. I think he's almost ready with the final mix of "Broken Wing." It's a kind of music that neither of us would have written alone, and it's interesting for that reason. It's also different than anything we've ever heard.
