Christmas Muzak! Aaaaaargh!
Now, I looooove traditional Christmas music, sacred and secular. Among my favs are Oh, Holy Night, Good King Wenceslas, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, and Oh, Come, All Ye Faithful. I even like some of the more "modern" tunes such as Blue Christmas and Santa Baby.
But I work at a book store where we've got Christmas Muzak CDs playing, and let me tell you, people have taken perfectly good music and had their way with it until it only vaguely resembles what it once was. Some songs seem like an homage to the producer - look how interesting my arrangements are and how clever I am with all the crazy sounds I can make. And some songs are all about the singer - look how I can take a reasonable melody and sing the hell out of it. What are they trying to do? Make a buck, that's what.
Now I'm all for making a buck from music, but when you forget why you're even making the music, all the soul is gone. All the art is gone. Music should never be made with money in mind. It's fine if money follows, but it shouldn't be the goal.
What do you think?
