How the Flintstones Ruined "Stardust" for me
Okay, I'll admit that I watched way too much TV as a kid, but that was just the culture of the day. TV was the real opiate of the masses. Anyway, there was this one Flintstones episode where Hoagie Carmichael was the guest star (back when songwriters were celebrities! Ha!) and Fred and Barney were trying to write hit songs. And for one of their songs, Fred sings a truly terrible lyric to Hoagie's tune "Stardust" that begins - Could it be love that makes me feel the way I do? That fuzzy-fuzziness. That ring a ding. That ring a ding a ding ... and it goes on like that. I just looked it up on Youtube; it's pretty funny. But, I had never heard "Stardust" before that, so I had Fred and Barney's Lyrics in my head when I finally heard the actual song. I read that "Stardust" is the most recorded song of all time. But, every version I've ever heard seems to me to have the wrong words. It really is a great song, and Victor Young wrote the lyrics, not Hoagie. But, if you don't know Hoagie Carmichael, look him up - he wrote some classic songs.
