How do we vote?
In the big IAC contest, I mean. I seem to have missed that part. The three songs of mine I chose are already getting mega play, so someone must be voting!

We're still testing the voting apparatus. Won't be long now.

While we're on the subject of the contest: What kind of songs would be entered in the Songwriting Category? And how is "Pop" defined these days?

What did I miss?

Re: songwriting category, I think their intention is to use it for songs that are not perhaps performed or recorded so well, but are nevertheless songs that you feel are well written, good songs. So any genre, I'd suppose.
Correct me if I'm wrong, it'll be a first :)

Sounds about right Lyin' Dan - nice way for a GOOD song to get noticed, even if the production quality is low....

That's what I'm counting on. At first I went for the "pop alternative" category (or whatever it's called). But then I realized that my recording skills leave much to be desired. I'm a decent player, but no virtuoso, so I asked to be switched to the "songwriter" category, hoping that the strength of the song itself is what's being judged, not the performance or fidelity of recording.

I entered a song in the Songwriting category, It had nothing to do with how well it was recorded, I just thought it was a well written, original song....so it made sense to me.

I didn't think low recording quality would be a prerequisite when i saw that catergory
rather a song with all the attributes of "quality"
intro---fine lyrics---structure---vocal delivery--verse--chorus --bridge--outro
but that's just me!!

Interesting enough, the song I entered is full of creativity, but does not follow a preconceived song structure. I have songs that follow the accepted norms of Songwriting, but I did not think to enter them as they are similar to many others "structure wise".
Bottom line, I think the Songwriting category is very broad, and you cannot fit it neatly in a box :)

I don't think there's a requirement that "songwriting" songs be crummily recorded. I do seem to recall a mention somewhere that the category was intended for what I said, but I can't find it now. Of course, it could be the drugs.
Anyhow, my tune "Fing Monica for Hanukkah" is superbly recorded and that wasn't a consideration in putting it in the songwriting category. Like yall, I merely thought it was excellently designed. The sterling recording quality is just a plus.

Of course a well recorded song is going to make a great song even better. But what are your thoughts on sound versus content? Can one hear a good song even if played and recorded poorly? Conversely, can you ever take an average, or even a bad, song and make it great just by great recording and playing?
To my mind, the value is in the content of a song before it even hits the airwaves - how it is written is more important to me than how it sounds, though I admit, there are tons of catchy songs that really mean nothing and have nothing new to say.
So which is more important to you, content or sound?
