Songwriting - Original Material or Divine Inspiration?

Sometimes a record almost 'writes itself'...so I wonder...

Did a monologue occur in my brain that created the record?

Or was it a dialogue that created a prayer to be shared with the world?

TAKE MY PLACE
by Aimee Terrin

WASTED ALL THIS TIME
ALLOWING MYSELF TO CRY
ALWAYS ASKING MYSELF WHY
MY LIFE WAS PASSING ME BY
PASSING ME BY

IT TOOK ME SOME TIME TO GET HERE
ALLOWING MYSELF TO KNOW FEAR
SEEMS LIKE I LOST MY WAY
GOING DAY TO DAY
AND I WOULD KNEEL DOWN AND PRAY
FOR YOU TO SHOW ME THE WAY
SO…

HOOK
GO AHEAD AND TAKE MY PLACE
LET THE WORLD SEE YOUR FACE
GO AHEAD TAKE MY PLACE
LET THE WORLD SEE YOUR FACE
SEE YOUR FACE
YOUR FACE

I KNOW THAT YOU CAN HERE ME
SEE I CAN SEE EVERYTHING SO CLEARLY
I NEED THE WORLD, WORLD TO FEEL ME
CAUSE I LIVE MY LIFE
I LIFE MY LIFE FOR THEE

HOOK

SPOKEN WORD
DEAR FATHER
MUSIC IS MY PAINTBRUSH
WORLD IS YOUR CANVAS
WHAT PICTURE DO YOU WANT ME TO PAINT?

SEE, SEE YOUR FACE

I wasn't able to listen to the song, because I'm writing on a laptop in the middle of Sunday night TV in the conservatory. I hate TV. I'd rather do anything but watch TV, but I'd also rather spend time w/ my family than not. So here I sit doing something else.

... but though I couldn't listen, I was impressed that you attempted video assemblage ... and accordingly I'll comment on that level of presentation.

First off, you photograph beautifully. You're strikingly pretty. The video itself is boring. I felt like I was watching Ken Burns' "Civil War. The updated amateur musical version".

LONG stretches of zoom in and zoom out ... and as pretty as you are, you can't hold any Sesame Street generations' interest in you that long. They want fast and furious video.

If you want to hold attention, you'll need FAR more pix and cuts ... and don't be so obvious w/ your glam shots ... tease more. It works better that way. Ask the experts. It's why they always hold the full reveal. This is reveal gradually up close and LONG getting there. I'd probably have done quick and short glimpses ... in a teasing way. Video has to build emotionally the same way music does.

My two on what I saw ... hope the input is helpful.

As a personal rule of thumb, I never force a song to go (or) not go anywhere. Given half a chance, the song will tell you what it wants you to put on paper.

Hi Aimee

Kevs a hoot-!

-
yeah but he is honest ....I just watched the vid and had no intention of evaluating ,I found the music the thing because I closed my eyes and listened through it and watched some as well

I thought the heart of the matter and the presentation was what counted. the video adds flavor. If it gets too complicated and over produced then it loses its function of what the message is all about.....but then again who am I to know. I know nothing about producing videos lighting effect capturing the audiences attention..

..if this was a knock out sexy song with all the moves twists and turns I am Sure Aimee would kick it out as well as she does her songs and blow your mind with what she is capable of doing and the eye candy part would have you virtually mesmerized I am sure

this song is something from the heart and had nothing to do with how it should have been, it was what each person captured from it, Kevs point of view is one person, he knows music, perhaps something about production of videos, how to present it in a way to draw the audience into what you are trying to convey and share in the music and connection to what was being communicated through this video medium, but honestly Kevin, everybody is going to glean from it what they want, and your personal opinion is just that, it is your take and to me ,I rather liked the Video even though I did not watch it completely but will now...

Okay ... morning has come and I can comment on the music.

I won't comment on the production, as that always gets me in trouble around here. :)

Very nice simple piece, a superb vocal performance, and your chorus is as you described in the lyric, a hook.

I do want to make a small note of one thing on the recording aspect. In certain spots, the vocal gets very hot and distorts. It's not there all the time, just something to watch for in the future. It doesn't distract from the presentation, and most casual listeners won't pick it up.

Good job, A.

you know, It's one thing to ask..
"hey is this any good?"
"Is my voice ok?",
"does the cliche hit factory sounding track fit right in with all the other urban contemporary dreck thats being squeezed out of the ass end of the modern music industry?"

to which the answer would be..YES, thats about right.

but really, even if for whatever irrational reason we decide to contemplate the idea of the "Divine", THE CREATOR OF THE COSMOS!! and the myriad life forms that populate this planet, THE GRAND ARCHITECT OF INFINITY!
does verse this really do that entity justice?

"GO AHEAD AND TAKE MY PLACE
LET THE WORLD SEE YOUR FACE
GO AHEAD TAKE MY PLACE
LET THE WORLD SEE YOUR FACE
SEE YOUR FACE
YOUR FACE"

If there is a GOD S/HE is feeling pretty insulted by the comparison....

I feel like youre a 5 year old just home from sunday school with a Maccaroni collage you made saying

"look mommy, the baby jesus inspired me to make this maccaroni kitty cat for you"

And we're supposed to.... what?
say "oh look!, thats the most beautiful kitty cat I've ever seen! the baby jesus really smiled on you today!! Lets go in te kitchen right now and put that on the refigerator!

what the fuck?

It's one thing to play games like that in your own head I guess, but do you have to come here and ask us for collusion in your delusions?
DIVINE INSPIRATION!!!
If I was God I'd throw a tomato at you!
I'd be thinking,
"Are you even watching this!! I created Infinity, orchestrated the universe!!!, Desigened your Nervous system on a lark!!!! You want to hear a HOOK Try listening to a birds at sunrise on the African Savana or the waves crashing against Big sur!!!"

I mean, if people want to say they hear the music of the spheres in Mozart and Holst, fine, whatever, those are creations that will resound in the human heart for centuries, truly magnicent art. I still dont think it's Divinely Inspired, but at least it doesn't piss me off when someone suggests the idea.

God speaks to us in many ways. Divine inspiration does not always come to us in big giant thunderous waves, creating the masterpieces some of you describe, more often divine inspiration speaks to us in smaller more subtle ways so as to reach everyone, share some message, at various levels of understanding.

I dont' think it's egotistical to say, "I felt inspired by God or The Creator" especially when/if it is coming from a place in genuinity.

I think when I have time I will provide my take on this subject.,and do an in depth approach, with historical snapshots of how music has shaped the various cultures through out mankinds history, in society, in religion, it appears to be something that needs to be addressed in a respectful and considerate point of view
or perhaps Kevin, Scott or others can respond to in perhaps a manner that is less destructive or belittling a persons feelings or sniping, or throwing down flaming arrows of venom as Diane pointed out ......

but then again..is it worth it..

music is for everyone
and music is a spiritual thing

I think I just may try to find time....although I already am way busy...as you all are

Look, I'm well aware that I'm being a total jerk here.

I think Aimee has a great voice, I really do. Maybe one of the better R&B voices on the site..

But trolling for listens by postulating that your song might be pouring through you from the almighty is so lame.
It's got this feel like...
"Is this really me, or are the heavenly host just using me as a vehicle?"

wow...
It's that bizarre ego disguised as humility thing.
I mean, cant you just ask us to listen to your song without postulating that this fairly ordinary R&B joint is being channeled from the Almighty?

Kumbaya, Frater PaNicK, Kumbaya.

Even 3 year olds can be divinely inspired, and they can only express it as they feel it. And do :)

I have that circuit failure (if, indeed, you can call it a failure, hmmm) also, as you may remember from 10 years of my own spew. If I'm not spewing now, well, I'm old and running down. Fun shame, too. Modern foils are pretty thin, compared to the old days. Why, I remember when, etc.

Actually when I posted this blog, I wasn't necessarily referring to "Take My Place" as divine inspiration---in fact in the comment section I wrote 'my prayer' and is probably my most 'gospel' type record. Additionally the youtube video was made by a fan and they uploaded a collage of pictures they found from the net.

So back to my original point...I've worked with producers that take weeks, months, and even years to complete a record and make it perfect...or at least by their standards. However as grandpa often said, and I've learned over the years ---- "You can't polish a turd"...so the point I'm trying to reitterate is that often times pretty records 'seem to write themselves'...instead of twisting and turning and wrenching and searching for all the 'proper' melodies and lyrics, over the course of a lifetime, I was simply suggesting that sometimes an artist pens a nice melody rather effortlessly as if it was already in your DNA and just needed the proper circumstance to explode out of one's soul....

So once again I just meant to suggest the possibility that sometimes when a writer is having difficulty 'perfecting' a record, learn to reject yourself before your peers do and place that writing in that little trash can in the corner of your computer screen before it ends up on youtube and a fan makes a collage of your pictures with it (most likely, right before he heads to show-off his macaroni sculpture at show and tell)

xoxo

Aimee cleverly pointed out

{However as grandpa often said, and I've learned over the years "You can't polish a turd". }

she is brilliant as a performer, awesome songwriter and has a great sense of humor too

that was a good one Aimee

and the recent follow-up on the blog today was truth indeed, as I have found myself in the inspired mode sometimes as a melody just happens spontaneously , in fact I think most really good tunes are that way....an idea is spawned, it gets nurtured and grows into a masterpiece...I have written a few songs in under 15 minutes, doesnt happen often , but when it does it is kinda scary, like sitting down and just play something on the piano and it just happens, the whole arrangement , could it be divine inspiration, well maybe not, but it is indeed a gift of wonderment to possess and write good instrumental music, which I know I do, am I arrogant as some say, perhaps, but I just think I am blessed with a marvelous gift of sorts that I have developed over the years , it has taken some nurturing, as i said before, I was not a child prodigy, I was very average, but somehow this thing inside of me these ideas pour out, i think it is in effect a part of me and my life history being manifested in song, I am not a songcrafter ie a lyricist but an instrumentalist one whose clear calling is writing lovely melodies with nice harmonic qualities, and it did not just happen, it took time to become that way as i was shaped during this sojourning I have been on here on earth...and I thank God for the musical gifts i have and the chance to share with others who appreciate those special gifts .not that I am saying that I am any beethoven or bach or handel...but damn close

have a great day all

Frater, in as much as I respect your posts, your input your ideas and musicianship which honestly is freaking damn good, I cant agree with you in this aspect at all about lowering the bar......I work with and have worked with many musicians, bands listen to loads of music and honestly it has helped me become a better musician player etc and I aspire to continue to improve myself in whatever I put my hand to, whether in music or what ever I may do, I love life , I love my fellow human being and I have bent over backwards supporting , encouraging and inspiring others unto good works

I beleive I have been put here on the face of this earth for a purpose and I am but a sojourner, traveling through time and space during this short span of one minute I have here on this planet we call earth, I am nothing in the scope of things. yes I believe in God, or a Cosmic creature far greater then I ,I believe in a power that has a mind that is so far reaching it spans this whole universe and knows everything that we do at any time, so I dont limit this amazing power nor will I limit my fellow human being,

I have seen people grow amazingly in front of my own eyes, I have as you do, the privilege and honor of teaching music, teaching students , and sharing what I have learned with them, and as I have taught others so do they TEACH me, I have learned as I have taught so learning and growing is a process.

I dont pretend to be Great, but I aspire to do great things and quite frankly Frater my music has inspired people..brought joy and uplifted many people and sometimes at special occasions moved them to tears at times on certain songs, some which I have not uploaded here.and some which are here, at other times people just have rocked their balls off dancing and having a good time.My calling is music, and has been since young, yes we may not be anything much in your eyes, but what really counts is what we are in Gods eyes

Thanks for all your fantastic songs, I love listening to them, I admire you as a musician and appreciate what you bring to the table here, I respect your thoughts but lets not limit others. You may think this blog is about stroking each other, white washing and doing the blow job thing, but it aint none of that. I am here for one reason and one reason only to motivate people to good works and support and encourage...you may think otherwise and that my music aint shit hot , but how many players have had the chance to play with one of the greatest innovators ever in the blues and rock as Bo Diddley , I did, and that my friend was an honor

... Sorry Frater, I disagree wholeheartedly ...
I think there are a LOT of people who have become masters at not being able to see the extraordinary things happening right in front of their eyes on a regular basis ... and I'll go one step farther and say ... A lot of those same people are MASTERS at trying to tear anything and everything down to a level they can relate too ...

look, I'm not saying there isn't some great music on this site or in the independent world as a whole.

And I'm not saying Aimee isn't a real tallent.

But really, R&B has become a generic brand, the beats predictable, the instrumentation predictable, the vocal nuance predictable.
some of it is quite good I guess, but there's very little innovation in it, I like this song just fine, but it's really just anotherR&B song.
And thats swell I guess, it's dead center of what the industry is putting out there.

But whats disconcerting to me is that these Independent Music communities are all about reciprocal compliments, people fluffing each other up in hopes that the favor will be returned, this thread is a great example, if you say something nice then you get "wow thanks, I think you're really Genius Too!!, seriously!!!""

Aimee has a Killer voice, but there's nothing groundbreaking in this music.
Really, we never challenge each other or call each other on the bullshit.
This song of Aimees is a VERY ordinary lyric, the music is very cliche, but it's comfortable...The only thing that really makes it kick is the production, it's a little ironic that she brings up the idea of Polishing a turd, because thats what R&B music (and most genres) are now, a turd polishing factory. If the goal is now to sound like the industry standard then the chances for innovation slip further and further away.

I listen to a LOT of modern R$B, and it's all the same.....switch the singer for any other and you'd barely notice...
when it was Michael Jackson, Prince, Jermaine Jackson, The Whispers, The S.O.S. Band, Stevie Wonder, Kool & the Gang, Yarbrough and Peoples, Smokey Robinson, Rick James, Diana Ross, Lionel Richie, Earth, Wind & Fire, Dazz Band, Evelyn King, Marvin Gaye, Mtume, DeBarge, Midnight Star, and Freddie Jackson....etc Mavis Staple!!! man, there was something happening because there was a very wide spectrum in the music, a LOT of variety and novelty in the instrumentation and the vibe...

now it's a hit factory...and thats a BAD thing.

I wish someone would have the nerve and the vision to surprise me..
I really miss that.

I hear ya Scott...I aint no R and b expert, so really I cant comment on that aspect with the same depth or insight as you can, and I did not say I am a genius, I like to think I have some capabilities that have been developed over time that places my music in a class all its own... . I am more into neo classical , instrumental rock some other styles that i venture into and the odd dumb ass fun song I do just because.....music is all about revealing yourself..and just bloody well having fun doing it......

Oh and the fluff thing. online blowjobs if you will I suck yours you suck mine, I dont go there, I tell people what I get out of it, and I aint going to rip someones music in front of the whole iacmusic world to see, I have made assessments honest assessments of some peoples music with suggestions that it is pretty good but needs improvement in areas, not often but occasionally, your point is what I should respond too, look , i listen to a dumptruck load of cds of people who send me there materiel for review and for possibly promoting there music and pitch it to radio , and asking me to go to there site and listen. i have rejected some , got back to others and told them my honest opinion in PRIVATE...no for the whole BLOODY WORLD to see, maybe you would get off on that if I posted some of my personal opinions of bands and soloists i have refused to promote,. would that turn you on!!!! would that be something you considered ballsy , would that make you respect me as a true musician reviewer , well no sir, that is confidential stuff

so what do you want. like me to say you are an asshole.. a prick. a dink. you dont know jackshit is that what you want....that 1 percent of the music out there is reasonable and the rest is garbage, that Aimee's piece of music here aint any good. I aint going to do that.. you have you area of expertise and I have mine, I damn it Scott I feel I do a reasonably good job in what I do when I do it. I rather play live then anything else. that is where the rubber meets the road, and that is where you see what you are made of....and I have done that smackloads of times as a soloist, in duos in bands and so on , and so have you..

You could say that it has all been done before anyways...don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that. Created in some, shape or form...all regurgited...just with your own take on it. I agree to disagree...as an artist, you have to expect that there will be negative as well as positive feedback...and to be honest with you, I enjoy both. How else can you grow as a musician? I never claimed to be some kind of "genius" ..you put that out there. I make music because there is nothing in this world that makes me happier. I would NEVER knock anybody for what they do...let's not get it twisted...this is NOT about stroking egos..it's called RESPECTING FELLOW ARTISTS...THERE IS NO WRONG OR RIGHT...This topic has been run into the IAC ground...and while this song is considered ordinary,it's shocking to me how much time and energy "someone" has been putting into it...for just being ordinary...but nevertheless, quite enjoyable.

on a side not...Bryon, I enjoyed reading your blog...very well put...and yes, I DO think you are quite the musician..you are somebody I respect, not only because of your talent, but your insight. You have worked with many great and well repected musicians....you know, Bo D must have considered you and your music just average,..right?? RIGHT....Next time I talk to George Clinton, I'll be sure to ask him why he chose me, just a mediocre artist to write and produce for him..on second thought....NAW!!

Man you are a hard guy to please Frater ! ... :)

For you ... it's all about innovation ... that's cool ...

I just like music ... period ... I'm not saying this tune is the greatest thing I've ever heard ... but every song don't have to live up to that impossible standard for me to enjoy it ... I loved the Vox on this tune and I said so... that's enough for me to respond ... I wasn't kissin' no ass ... or expecting anything in return ...

I see those remarks made a lot ... and they really irk me ... not EVERYONE is an insincere gas passer ...

Hey Never Never,
Tried posting this before and it didn't come up, so I'll try again. If it does, forgive me for the double post. I agree with you on how R&B is today. Too "cookie cutter" and the stuff that is "cookie cutter" isn't great to me at all. All those groups you mentioned before in your post, I still jam to in my car to this day. I know you know about R&B and Hip Hop, we discussed Paris, The Conscious Daughters and you coming from Oakland...I just saw on Twitter where they are calling Justin Bieber an "up and coming R&B singer"...R&B singer??? Give me a break!!! Justin, although a good singer for his age, is not a R&B singer. He's is "Bubble-Gum Pop" in my opinion. I cannot for the life of me, see him singing Smokey Robinson's, "The Tracks Of My Tears". Not believable. I am a "old school" believer in that in R&B and Blues, you have to go through the life experiences(up and down) to be able to write and sing those kind of songs. He's 15 years old for God's sake!!! He's in the early stages right now where Donny Osmond and MJ were at that age. Corporate and commercial radio is to blame for alot of this labeling crap.
There are artists out there that don't get radio play, who I think are true R&B singers; Dwele, Musiq Soulchild, Goapele, some Usher songs, Mint Condition...I could go on. But, because some of these artists don't sing about "slappin that ass (WAP SMACK...for you Bryon. LOL)" or "me gindin' my thang on your thang on tha dancefloor", it doesn't get played. It SUCKS ASS.
Aimee, has what these artists I mentioned above. Real talk. She'll be there soon and I hope when she gets there, she will get her just desserts. If you saw her performance for Akon on her video, Akon even asked if she has experienced some tough things in her life to write songs like she does. This was just one song brother. One song. I hope you are not reading too much into her blog because I think she has what it takes...Much respects to you Scott.

Slim

P.S. Scott in those good R&B days, artists were more subtle about sex because of the times and FCC of course. The artists used more "play on words" to express the sex and loving part. "Sex sells" is the theme today. I'd rather see a fine-ass woman in fine clothes and wonder,"what does she look like without the clothes", than just seeing a butt-nekkid woman throwing herself out there for all to see...I like the thrill of the chase and the anticipation of what comes later. Feel me?

Well Bryon I want you to remember, this is becoming insulting to Aimee now reading her last post I don't blame her for being defensive,.... criticize if you must, but say your peace and move the f*** on.. Make a new blog or something. She has been more than patient, she was just communicating her feelings, she has been more than gracious. You may love the drama not me, life is hard enough, being creative and putting it out there, stomping a dog to death isn't...

But please by all means, continue...

Bob, no I have already talked to Aimee in private..she'll do what she feels best, and if she wants to kill this thing then so be it, she can slay this dragon any time. I do like interaction , but I think you are right that this has crossed the line

music is so subjective , personal opinion, what someone thinks is great someone else will think otherwise.......the problem is if it gets to the point where an individual makes comments that this is what it is all about is just plain arrogant and closed minded and shows a total lack of understanding what music is all about and what it should do for you...seems like some people treat it like a chess game here. music is for everyone and everyone is going to have various opinions and what Scott thinks is the cats ass , may be dung to someone else
