I just had a song mastered....what should I be listening for?
I just got a song I've been working on back from a mastering engineer.
What should I be listening for to determine whether or not he's done the best possible job?
If you're curious you can listen to the song here:

Did you send the mastering engineer a mix or the individual wav files?
When you listen to the mix you created and then listen to the mastered product what differences do you hear?
The ability of the mastering can depend on the file integrity and quality of the original recording the mastering engineer can't re-invent the wheel.
Did you have your wav files recorded in 24 bit ? Do you feel that you gave the mastering engineer the best possible track to work with?
Now I don't have any heavy duty specialized mastering equipment and my mastering software is some what limited. If you want a sample of what my mastering sounds like go to my Alpha Omega page.

If you so desire I will master one song for you 100% free and you can see which version you like better .

It's a good song, well performed! I like the mix and mastering too. If I could change one thing I would say that it needs a little more bottom (bass) That's just my subjective opinion based on my personal taste. As a demo it sounds fine as is.
Compare the mastered track to the unmastered track and also compare the mastered track to a professionally recorded known song in a genre similar to yours that has a mix you like. it. Sometimes when a simple adjustment needs to be made (like increasing the bass guitar) it's a good idea to fix that in the unmastered track and then have it mastered again.

What a wonderful song with a refreshing and timely message. The mix and mastering sounds very good to me. This song sounds to be broadcast ready in my humble opinion. Generally, what works best is to compare it to the orginal. If the overall sound dexterity has increased, it has been well mastered. Highs and lows should sparkle without any sound anomalies present. Big Congrats on completing this spectacular project. Much Respect, Stoneman

Good guitars & vocals, good song. If there's a bass somewhere in that mix I might bring it forward a bit but outside of that it's very well done.
