Has anyone tried Second Life?
I haven't yet, but this story made it sound pretty cool:

If you've tried it before, what did you think about it?

I know Keiko was helped a lot with Second Life, also some other artists have created more buzz there. I haven't tried myself though.

What I don't understand is why anyone would pay real money for Linden dollars (fake money). It does seem like an interesting way to get your music heard though.

Some of you know Shauna. She was big into Second Life and once took me on a tour of it. I created a character and we did some things in there, exploring her nightclub, listening to music, and just seeing how the place worked. It was fun and I could see how people could end up spending a lot of time there. I haven't been back much just because I have too much to do already.
I have Shauna's Second Life name - if you go in and want to find her, just email me.

I first went in to meet up with a couple of my old bandmates that are spread around the world. It's kind of nice to sit at the same table and chat. you actually forget that you're in a 'virtual' world. I did a couple of 'vitual concerts' there. That was weird but people seemed to be having a good time.
I also was a participant in a training session for some video software that I was thinking of purchasing.
I bought some 'virtual land' with money I made there and spent some time building castles. I have a renter or two there now. I own a sculpture art park on the mainland.
I don't have much time to go there now, but it's nice to go and visit folks I've met now and again.

I have been doing Second Life Music since June of 2008. It's a great venue and has Peeps from all over the world tuned in to your music.
Second Life is not one chat, it is a conglomeration of different islands, mainlands and other reigions. There are venus set up by peeps that have bought land and started a club. As in Real Life you can get a bookie or go about it on your own.
Just think you can play to the world and not have to lug around all your equipment, set up, tear down and pack it up at 2: AM in the mornig. You play from the comfort of your own studio.
There have been two peeps that have recieved contracts from the outworld one is Von Johin who got a contract in Nashville doing old style blues and another fellow who had his original tunes used in the lastest movie with Jennifer Aniston.
Yes there is hope.
I have a show tonight at China Reds at 7:00 pm PST.
You can catch me there.
Look for Izdovrcr Finesmith
See ya Inworld

I had a chance to play around in it last night for a couple of hours. I thought it was overwhelming at first, trying to figure out how to move around and teleport to different islands, customize my character etc, but I think I'm finally starting to get the hang of it. I couldn't find a club where any music or any performers were playing though...
As far as the streaming station idea, I came across one place that had a kiosk that connected out to streaming radio stations. For some reason I couldn't make it work, but I think it's definitely possible. I've got a feeling there's probably also a way to set up a jukebox or something. More on that later...
I'm starting to wonder if I can find a street corner on it somewhere that attracts a decent amount of traffic, where I can pull a guitar out and start busking? :)

Tarotkid Try
The Merry Prankster
The Tranquil Cafe
The Hummingbird Cafe
Mama's
Red Rocks
Memphis Blues
type these venues in your sl search
you'll get a pop up with the venue and you can open up the info and find the tp (teleport button)
As far as pulling out a fiddle and start playing you need to have some downloads
one being butt or simplecast. these are programs that will get you streaming. Next you need a stream. You may buy your own but most venues have one you may use.
The information from the stream will be imput into the encoders supplied with one of the programs above.
If you need help inworld look me up

I tried it once, but my computer was way under powered and Second Life way to much of a resource hog. I was paralyzed in cyberspace and could move a virtual muscle.
Concerts in cyberspace is an inetresting idea, but internet lag etc means the musicians must be in the same place IRL.

Andy,
They have programs that let others play together in different places. What the program does is send the stream to the next person and they pick it and and start playing with it. The stream is then sent to the url where is is being brodcast.
I have seen a few peeps do this and turned out to have some nice shows. There are other programs that wil let you do real time but there is a cost factor involved.

I've been playing around more and think I have the hang of it. Live music is easy to find now that I'm searching Events instead of just trying different venues that sometimes feature live performers. One guy yesterday had a fairly large crowd, for something like this, I'd guess he had 80-100 people listening at a time.
The crowds all seem to be very supportive and tip occasionally. Some artists are better at others at selling CDs and promoting themselves but I've come to the conclusion that this is a viable place to play to try to find new fans, if your computer can handle the software :)

I'm really getting the hang of this now and see a lot of potential with Second Life as another way to promote your music, that is once you can get past the initial learning curve of editing your avatar and finding good musical instruments and animations, and getting a Shoutcast stream setup.
My first "gig" is scheduled for Saturday and the club owner is already out promoting the show to her regulars. In fact a few of them have emailed me, have been on my IAC page and are excited to be at the show. To me, this is a lot less frustrating than begging my friends on Facebook to show up and watch me perform at a coffee shop, or than spamming message boards saying "check out my free MP3's!!!" In fact, getting people interested in learning more about you and your music seems to be as easy as walking around with a guitar on your back.
I'll give an update after the show but right now I think I'm almost as excited as when I first found out I could release my music on the internet the first time.

They did an article on Second Life in EM a little while ago ... and for a while, it was ALL over CSI Crime Scene Investigation (Las Vegas) ...
I've got the firepower needed in my computer, but I seem to not have enough time in this life, never mind a second one. :^D
How's the sound quality in the venues? Live streaming has it's own bit stream issues ...

The show is at a venue called The Old Barn at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Metropolis%20Unknown/20/52/21 and it starts Saturday at 1pm Pacific time.
The sound quality I've heard from other performers has been great. As I understand, the sound quality depends on your shoutcast server and isn't dependent on Second Life servers.

I can barely handle this life; but I do have a good friend who prefer's second life to real life. Well, acutally, she says that her "second life" is her real life. She states that it is where she gets to be who she was always meant to be. She takes her lap top everywhere she goes because she gets very distressed if she thinks there is a chance she might get cut off of her second life. I find it very interesting. It's like her other reality. Who is to say what is really real? I would not be willing to try Second life. I'm pretty sure I would get sucked in and never come back to this life as Debbie Hoskin.
