Well, I wonder what a plain old listener thinks, anyway?
Noah's topic had to go sit in the corner before I had a chance to add my thoughts. Enjoy:

I don't find any problems at all with the way the site is built, it seems to be full featured, easy enough to use, and the artist community seems to like it - so everybody stand up and give the admins and owners a round of applause. Good job, guys, good job. I am quite sincere here, I don't want you to think I am lampooning you in any way OR think I don't appreciate all the hard work and careful thought that went in to it.

Now - down to business. I don't think I need to be paid to listen, although I am stoked that Noah has decided to put some thought into what might make "me" (that's the collective "me", the unwashed dirty sock listener) happy. I don't want to be paid, I want to be ENTERTAINED. That may sound selfish and bratty, but you guys are supposed to be ENTERTAINERS, right? And, let's be honest, you want me to give you my money. That's all good, you invested yours, along with your heart and soul, in what you do, you want me to follow through and hold up my end. Nothing wrong with that at all - that's what we are all here for.

As I said, the site is just fine - the big problem is that I just am not that excited about it. It's not a hardware problem, it's a software problem. Bryon, whom I have come to respect, says that "general public" traffic is just fine, there is plenty, and he is happy. Is that true across the board? If so, what aren't they here?

Over the course of the last decade, I have come to realize that I am a weirdo, a complete dipshit that thinks that the "unsigned" or "DIY" (I HATE THE TERM INDIE) may have as much to offer as those with more substantial backing. Yes, there may be a lot of crap to wade through (one man's crap is another's ideal, to each his own, rawkon) but I would be willing to wade through it AS LONG AS I AM BEING ENTERTAINED. If I get bored, eff it, there is the whole internet out there, plus several hundred channels of TV, gigs of albums on my hard drive, booze in the bar, and napping. And, Amazon will always be there, with customized recomendations from SIGNED acts that I know and trust - point click buy. I am pulling for you guys, but you have competition.

Anyway, don't know if any of that is useful, but it's my perspective. I don't really see too many "listeners" chiming in, so I guess that means I RULE. rock me

LURKY LISTENERS: pipe up - agree, disagree - the site is here for "YOU" as much as it is for "them"

Hope yout 'puter problems get resolved, Bryon.

You know, it's no big whoop to me, one way or another. I looked at the front page, there are about 11000 concurrent sessions right now. Assume 10% of that traffic is "non-artist" traffic (pulled that number outa my butt) = 1100 listener sessions. Of those, if 1% visit the Pipeline, that's 11 listener sessions peering down. If you assume that 75% of those sessions belong to shy folks (after all, social networking is just NOT going to catch on, and clearly people hate to type on web pages, put that in your tweet and smoke it) that leaves 2.75 sessions, one of those is me, so there should be at least ONE lurky Lou up there that is not too shy, right?

C'mon Lurker, type something, it's free! I know you are up there.

Regarding being entertained, well, unfortunately that seems to be a concept of an earlier online era, at least pertaining to communities that aren't enormous like the oriiginal mp3.com. The kind of cult of personality fun stuff we were part of at mp3.com is looked down upon almost as a rule by the kind of folks who post at music sites nowadays. Instead of hanging in there and taking on that which they don't find appropriate, many just threaten to move on if their sensibilities are too threatened by crazy shit.

Indie music needs stars but the artists don't really allow for that to happen, it's like the crabs in a bucket metaphor, not for everybody but for enough of the neighborhood.

There was a time when I believed this to be a great place for listening to music. With given perspective I think time here listening to music or reading blogs has got be confusing to most people (out there ) listeners/fans vs listener/artists with associations and history within the industry, what do you think Jingo?

anyone?

personally, I don't listen to music here and have not for some time. If anyone would like to ask me questions as to why, go ahead. Time is limited though as I now listen at places where i don't feel harassed or followed about to hear music i enjoy / love.

Ok, a few observations: first, I realize that this thread is a response to another thread that has been removed from the forum, so some context is lost. Bad form on my part.

I re-read Art Factory's posting, and here is what I THINK I get from it - as a fan/listener, AF didn't feel comfortable being the outsider among artist/listeners. As a result, AF has found other places to fill the need for music.

If that's the case, and I am really going out on a limb there, I tend to agree. As an "outsider" I can relate - that's why I am attempting to call down lurkers from on high. The artist/listener needs fan/listener to keep them honest.....

AF, hope I got close.

To Fly, okay that's nice

To Phlegm, (insert another comment here)

To Jingo, exactly

edit: (sorry, i did not see your post first) I don't view my time here as a fan/listener.. or as an outsider. I've listened to music all my life for the purpose of working through views of life sometimes in a larger context than for personal reasons.

I don't get it. Listening to music here has absolutely nothing to do with getting "harrassed" on a forum here which no one is forced to click to read. Is this sort of like string theory?

Part of the 'problem' to responding in the pipeline is ...you need to sign up. But I can listen to everything without signing up which is a good thing. Not everyone wants to take the time to sign up, I don't sign up just to write a comment on other sites. I don't even take the time to read all the topics in the pipeline.

I like the tag boards 'cause you don't need to sign in. I've invited friends et al ..to my page to listen and they can choose to search around to hear others.

As an artist..I always want listeners.

I'm a fan of indies and up and coming artists myself. I love the live connection and get their CD's right after I've seen their show. I've done this since I was a kid and just now realized how much I love the unknown person. There is alot of talent out there and yes it takes alot of listens to find the gem.

I get the part 'as long as I am being entertained'. Unfortunately, I feel like I need to be grabbed within the first 20-30 seconds of a song to keep me. I am hard on myself as most artists are so I'm always trying to be better than I was the last time you heard me. I've spent more time and energy playing live shows in the last couple years and trying to build a fan base. Spent some time on internet presence but it's a tough balance doing the artist/promoter/booker/manager part and be a fulltime wife/parent/income earner. all in all it's alot of work - and I am grateful to the listener, encouraged by the commenter, ecstatic by the purchaser, wowed by the fan, and humbled if it happens all again :-)

happy listening
Carolyn

Excellent read, this one was.

Almost makes me think there may be some Indies out there who don't have to whine, to exist. Who are just quietly pursuing their illogical music dreams.

I don't understand the "Harassed" comment at all...... Listening is a total anonymous experience. The only harassment I have seen comes from Anons on the pipeline, and I would not deem it harassment, its more like smart assed remarks meant to get a rise.

Do artists "Harrass" behind the scenes for listens??? Votes??? what?? I have been here over two and a half years and I have not seen it. Who is turning off listeners?? Artists?? Trolls??

Hey Laree, I did not miss the fact that you are on point-click-buyazon, thanks for the info!

Carolyn brings up the point that signing up/ signing in is a factor, and I can see where that might be an issue for some. And her points about effort expended, all a good read.

I was a confused about the harassment as well, but maybe there is some history I don't know.

QUESTION: Be honest, damn it: am I harassing? A troll? ANON?

Seems maybe I failed to conjur another listener, but I tried.

Jingo I mention this from a long term perspective. I have not seen harassment from you. That's just it I think people read way too much into people's comments/music. With what I've seen IAC has become a community of artists collaborating in effort to make better music. Which is fine and offers a niche unlike anywhere else. If that excludes others such as the general listener from posting I don't know.

Bluto, had your comment / opinion been formed as a direct question where we would have dialogue I 'might' have been able to answer you specifically, isn't that true for everyone? I don't have a gripe, or an issue that I am not here either, I just don't have time to qualify where or why I listen to music.
