I heard about it when I was young and naive (a few years ago)... ;-)
I joined Reverbnation and started tracking my plays and chart spot and listened to those ahead of me.
Was a bit perplexed by a few that were doing covers (and not very good at it) having thousands of listens. Wata smelly fish it was...
A friend told me you can buy plays of your songs if you want to move up in the charts.

So, views on Youtube are selling for like a tenth of a cent apiece, a penny apiece for Instagram followers, facebook likes, 3 cents. Only the facebook likes are claimed as being done by humans, there's no such claim on the other stuff. So there's an army of hired facebook likers making a penny apiece or something, the rest of it are well-tuned robots? Apparently.
Hmmm. Gotta be based in India for facebook likers. How quick can you click a targeted like? Every 15 seconds? So, 3-4 cents a minute? A couple bucks or so an hour if you pee in a bucket? That may be decent money in Mumbai.
The cheap views on Youtube are what gets me. Are these all completed? Surely not. Even for a robot. What's it take for Youtube to count a view? Some of those videos are an hour or two. Sounds fishy to me.
Anyway, yes these guys are scumbags, but perverting commercialism is the American way nowadays.
Better get with the program.
