it's called "done ...down to it..." That means either your songs are folk..rock..or hard rock
only the best get in....that means like your song flows...
if it has a good beat for an intro and you don't live up to it ..it's not worth it
if you sing a folk song without sorrow in your voice your out
sorry that's the way it is...
only the best songs are songs at all

steve, you need some space between your vocals and instrumentation
try to hit your notes with your vocals or try to accent you vocals with your instruments...there's a goody HUH, you got a good band and your guitar playing is conciderate. maybe it was just this song, sorry, joel

My submitted songs are not down-beat either. I kinda missed that aspect (it wasn't really defined). Sorry about that, Joel. I'll submit others for your consideration:

"I Do" is pretty down-beat.

And while "For My Friends" is hopeful and optimistic, it still comes from a kinda down place.

Maybe one of these with qualify. Maybe not. But I appreciate your ear.

I've got one I wrote just for good friend. A 60yr old harp player named Keith Brown. He listened to the track once and we did this in the first take... called Say What You Mean
