How to Know? Or approach? It's my soul I want to feed
I am going to start with a new group of musicians tomorrow. I would say they are almost a band. They have been together for a year now and did not really have a leadsinger (the guitarist had been playing the part so far), heard my tracks and contacted me to be their frontman. They are far more rock & roll than PopiKoK is but I love the dirty pushing sound and I think my lyrics and voice will work well. I have total freedom to write all the lyrics and they will adjust the sound based on the way I sing as well as adjust the structure to the way I write songs.

What I want to know is how to approach a new venture like this so that all things are honest, fair, and open. I also want to make sure I get a proper feel of everyone and the set up to know if it's a good thing. Can anyone give me a few pointers or tips?

It does not have to be my band
I do not want to have total control
I want to know that everyone is listening and playing within the track and each other
I want the story/song/music told/performed properly

This is not the end of PopiKoK. I will be recording new tracks soon. But I would play, create, collaborate and or write songs everyday with many different artists if I had the chance.

The only thing I can think to add here is just experience working as a session muso. Things just gel, it happens or it wont. I would say you will know fairly quickly. I'm not talking about the sound or the arrangement that take time and work, just the flow of creativity is it being impeded or not.

The Doors, one of my favorite bands all met at a transcendental meditation class. I think the name of the band comes from Huxley's book "The Doors of Perception", so they had this common mindset from the start.

So I guess what I trying to say if it feels right it will work out in the long run. If it feels wrong even if it sounds good you could run into problems down the road.

Go with your feelings. Youve got the right approach already

I'm glad to hear its not the end of PK. Fantastic creative music you've got happening

Democracies generally don't work with bands.

We have a very Democratic Band - I tell them what to
do and they do what they want!

don't go to rehearsal too drunk to play. :~) also be super honest about what you do/don't like. but diplomatically.

ole banana has a point!!

usually one person will take some sort of leadership role (or already has)

how you interact with that person will be important for your creative soul to survive!!

there will be some kind of "pecking order"

how you feel there will also matter!!

I would hope that they see you as a new influence---and start again from page one----but that won't be easy as they will already have a history

i would love to have ewe here at silverwood!!!!!! hehehe

Be yourself and respect others as you always do.
Remember to talk and remember to listen.
Give yourself and accept help and advice.
Put the band first while you are ith them and yourself first when alone.

Great input here on your post PopiKoK ~~!
I'll just add the importance of compromise, or at least PERCEIVED compromise. And if you're the LEADER, don't be afraid to act like it.

And don't be too married to the players, unless they're friends, family, or co-composers, the members they will be a' changin'-- a number of times-- over the course of the DECADE it takes, to REALLY have your music start takin' off.

Music is a FREE thing that comes from that ethereal place, or from some type of MUSE; and thusly the musician themselves are free spirits as well. So DON'T hold on too tightly, and do as Ray does --- try your best to treat them with respect.

I'm not the best at all of this, but I like to think that having a band survive for more than 6 years counts for something.

hmmmmm... one final thing -- don't be afraid to be the SAM or HUGH, and be a talented, creative mo' fo' with no band....

whoops! rather than editting the POST, I'm gonna just add this important bit. HANG out with them. Do OTHER stuff than just BAND, or you'll have no GLUE to stick together when music times get rough, and I guarantee you they will.

Watch for addiction behaviour that is crippling to a band, or player's ability to deliver. Pray for FUNCTIONAL addicts that can create & flow with it like the gods of chaos, if you DO have to deal with some type of major addiction. And don't forget to have FUN while doin' the music thing. When it becomes WORK, and not fun, most musicians will bail quicker than snot drippin' down a door knob....errrrr or some other appropriate analogy.

AND FINALLY as soon as you can, GET 'em to the studio when you're TIGHT, because THIS moment in time with THESE musicians MAY be gone forever in a flash due to OH-so many possible reasons.

That's all for now. Thanks for givin' me a chance to share a little bit o' wisdom about something I've learned MUCH about in the last 12 years....

Don't have huge expectations. It often sets us up for disappointment. View it as something you are going to try on, like a new pair of shoes. If it fits great. If not, no harm done. Go with your gut feeling. You'll either feel it or you won't. Listen to what the others are saying. Is there agenda different or the same as yours? Just be you and see how it goes. Deb
