whoa..
I stumbled onto this and proceeded to go on like an hour long Aretha jag. Saw an amazing performance from 1970 of I Say A Little Prayer. You know Aretha was really beautiful back then, I would've married her. :)
She's up there with Karen Carpenter as my favorite female vocalist.

Even though 'little prayer' was the first record I was given back in the day, I never really felt too strongly about Aretha Franklin's voice, not compared to Dionne Warwick anyway. Dionne had a unique tone but Aretha, not so much and many female vocalists sound like her. I agree Karen's soft, deep resonance is a one off however.

Father Time, Karen Carpenter is also one of my all-time female vocalist too!
In fact I had a strong crush on her and boy did I cry when she passed away :'-(
She was one of a kind and singers nowadays can only aspire to be as great as her!

I'm already slain without watching.
"(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman" by Aretha Franklin,
will always, always, make me cry.
Probably because I always wanted to find a woman
who I made feel that way. I had a best friend, I had a co-visionary
and co-conspirator, in my late wife. But this...
what she projects in this song, it kills me.
And it doesn't surprise me to read that it moved Barack to tears.
I'll have to come back to this.
I don't wanna have to cut off my head with a butterknife.
My wife loved me much of the time,
but sometimes, she hated the hell out of me for not being financially successful...
I'm thankful for the good times we had, for they were many.
But no, seeing this, right now,
could be grounds for going to a place I do not need to go.

now that I've explained my personal reasons,
I will say this,
if you are unfamiliar with this song,
it's one of the best songs ever written,
and if you are unfamiliar with Aretha's version of this
(ironically, Lesley Gore, also did a version of this,
which is not a tenth as good as Aretha's,
sorry Lesley, but I say it like I see it and hear it)
Well Then, Yeah, Father Time Is Correct:
You Have To See And Hear This.
As for me,
I'll live to cry myself to death another day.

Well I had a peep but I found it all a bit OTT to be honest, I don't know what Carole King was on but I gotta get me some o dat :) They say Democrats cry more than Republicans don't they :) x
PS Aretha should play piano more and sing less heehee

Well I watched it and thought it was a pretty good performance,
in fact now I want to look up the entire show
as I see this presentation was a Tribute to Carole King,
one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century in my opinion!
By the way, Lesley, OTT means Over The Top
and I agree with Jill to some degree, after the 3 minute mark it did go
a bit into the dramatics, but I guess it was just for emphasis
and the crowd did enjoy it.

Lesley, Jilly has some blunt, strong opinions, you'll have to adjust to that. heh
I think she meant Carole's reaction was over the top. but Carole did not know Aretha would be there performing that night, let alone that she'd sit down at the piano. Personally, I loved seeing Carole get that excited. and I don't think she has a phony bone in her body.

I think there's nicer ways to say things, but Lord knows
I've been tact-challenged myself on occasion,
so I'm hardly about to make a federal case of it.
And I will watch this.
I'd just rather cry alone.
And I'm already working on the song this thread led me into thinking up.
So what's the downside, Father Time?
That the girl who helped you make that Classic of yours
"That Stupid War" doesn't like Aretha's singing?
It's sad, I think, but really, she's entitled to her opinion, and, her loss.
Over the top, is a relative perception.
People can sometimes be that, it doesn't mean you stop loving them.

Hey, I never said I disliked Aretha, it was the first record I owned but since then I realised there are many very similar, good singers and her voice is not distinctive - maybe she was a first but I wouldn't recognise her like the others mentioned.
I'm not nostalgic about songs and artists as a rule, I prefer to move forward.
I often tease FT about his taste and he's ok with that. No-one dies if they don't agree with me or vice versa. I often change my mind according to mood I'll admit, but isn't that what the Pipeline is all about, a battle of tastes and rooting for your heroes!

I never said you can't have or are not entitled to your opinion.
For the record, for me, for these ears,
Aretha is nothing but distinctive...
I'm guessing that you are younger than me, and therefore, may not know.
Aretha literally invented this 'free wheelin' style of singing. Literally invented it.
No one did that before she came along. Sure there are others who took the ball
and ran with it, and since those old days, sure, you can easily make
the claim, anybody could, that those other ones get played more on the radio,
and isn't that what the goal is? to be played on the radio? If you make it to that, then you begin to feel like you've really for real made it, I know I'd feel like that if it ever happened...
but just because there are others to emulate what she did,
she's still the one who put it, not only on the map, for all to see
and know, and yes, make use of themselves,
she put it on the menu.
This morning, I will watch this.
And I will surely cry.
Incidentally, I thought your work
on Father Time's "This Stupid War" was absolutely Immortal, Dear.
Took a Great Record, and made it just a Classic For All Time. Not bad.

My glasses. Now look like.
The windshield in a sudden blast of rain
before you get around to turning on the windshield wipers.
I cried all through this, from practically the first note.
Everyone, from Carole King whom I gather was the
main honoree at this event, to the President and First Lady,
were all up on their feet, standing, and cheering,
some with a tear in their eye, Barack teared up right at the start,
I'd beaten him to it, but only by seconds...
I have to go clean my glasses now. I knew this would happen.
Folks,
watch, or don't watch...
But I Defy You,
To Not Be Moved,
If you give this a chance.
