sometimes I wonder f the muse itself is more responsible for great music than the actual artist
when you get close to the muse, it seems to have its own qualities, like it has an identity in itself. Is this music mine, or does it belong to some spirit?

I believe that each person is his or her own muse. Your music comes from you and you alone. It comes from the sum total of who your are and where you're at. Sometimes you have to dig deep inside yourself to reach your "inner muse" but in the end it's all you. To suggest the presence of a muse that comes and goes at his or her own discretion and will and who is someone separate from one's self is to not give credit where credit is due. Your subconscious holds all the keys to all the doors of who you are as an artist and what kind of art you create. By tapping into that idea you empower yourself to create when you want to create and to inspire yourself when you want to be inspired.

Like Lesley, I attribute all of my creative endeavors to the ether and the ghosts that follow me.
Most of the great creators will openly admit the same thing. These ideas, or feelings, are channeled from outside of our bodies. We are antennas. We all have the same tools for receiving the signal, and some of us listen.

I was thinking about how the greatest artists don't often seem to be able to sustain, often they only have one period where they are explosively creative. Van Morrison, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Dylan. All had a short period of time when all their work was golden. Maybe it's the muse movin' on thru.

Obviously, I can only speculate, and I like to use anecdotes that seem to fit the framework as I see it.
A big part of me feels like I have seen dead people as long as I can remember and they keep me company as well as guide me. Some will write it off as my imagination, but from my perspective it is more real than the floor I stand on.
There is an interesting dynamic with the artists you mentioned as well as many others who's epic time seems to have come and gone.
I have to wonder if their hunger for tapping into what motivated them before they became popular tapers or disappears once the overwhelming nature of managing that level of popularity takes residence in their psyche and the drive that fueled their success falls to the way side.

well that surely happens in some case.
in the words of Neil Young from Thrasher
They were lost in rock formations or became park bench mutations

my take on the muse ...
Drink him in anesthetize your fears
but nothing can quench the thirst of your tears
but the fire .. ohhhh the fire
Woo her out to melodize the veneer
be she a love letter or a lust souvenir
you don't know ... you just don't know
the heretic's pen warns that truth is a lie
the songstress she mourns sanity's suicide just to hide
the bliss in her mind
the hooligan master romances the flames
the guild prepares pallets of rhythmic, passionate waves
full color gales, in arpeggio scales
possessed by a doctrine of invisible laws
professed to protect and perfect phantom flaws
crib until tomb ... crib until tomb
coos of inspiration this affair is full bore
muse craves a creation a lucubration's in store
feed her womb .. feed her womb
hey hey ...
let's get it on, fornication's begun
with guitar strings, a painting is slung
on the wall ... see the wall
locked in a zone, sketching some dreams
from penned poets prose sweet melodies scream
hear the crow .. hear the crow
the heretic's pen warns that truth is a lie
the songstress she mourns sanity's suicide just to hide
the bliss in her mind
the hooligan master romances the flames
the guild prepares pallets of rhythmic, passionate waves
full color gales, in arpeggio scales
first light reveals a macabre scene
blood, sweat and guts moans the amputee
welcome home ... welcome home
out of the hush comes the hooligan's retort
muse stole the seeds, smashed the fruit on the floor
dirty whore ... she controls the fire
