when your own songs don't sound like you no more
Is this a good thing or bad?
I wrote this song back in oh, 1987 or something. It was always the song I was savin' if I didn't make it in rock. I see it as worthy of the Grand Ol' Opry. So anyway with BEATLESEX' help I've nearly finished the song and it definitely doesn't sound like me, it's like almost a violation.
That said it's kind of cool. Funny, doing a song that comes from another part of me makes me feel sort of naked.
Another song from my harddrive I was looking at. It needs more backing but then again it's kind of unique as is. So many decisions that it's up to me to make.

I like discovering new things about myself, personally. It excites me when I strike an unfamiliar tone in my work, and collaboration has often been a great way of achieving that.
It sounds like you could be on to something, Go boldly!! :)

Well, I ask 'a violation to what exactly?'
To some perceived idea of what you're supposed to sound like?
According to who or what?
There is a lot to a person, and no one is all one thing. Explore.
Noah said it well; Go Boldly.
And don't get trapped in a comfort zone or it won't be very comfortable long.

The first time a band did a cover of one of my songs, it really blew my mind. It was pretty faithful to the original but different enough to be very surreal from my perspective. It's like one day one of your children comes home from school and has blue eyes instead of brown. It was quite unsettling and at first I wasn't sure how I felt about it but after repeated listens it really grew on me and I love it. It was just so interesting to see how my work could be interpreted in different ways. It was a truly enlightening experience. You love your child regardless of their eye color, right?

I've kept a playlist of all the cover versions of my songs. Yeah, it's weird hearing another voice singing your words back at you. Especially when you had nothing to do with the recording.
It's fun, though. Even the version or two on here that I don't care for is fun to listen to. And, it's flattering as hell.

Yes, it's definitely an honor when your song is covered, regardless of how it comes out.

don't worry about "sounding like you" when makin' sounds... it will only hold ya back. Just make them sounds!!!! It's ALL good!

The music I wrote and produced in the 70's and 80's sounds nothing like the music I produce now. I am very thankful for that! :)
