Prince - came in as a censored pariah, leaves as a public icon
As Rachel Maddow pointed out on her show last night, the early days of Prince's career were mostly known for pushing the envelope in popular music in the area of sexuality. He was at the top of Tipper Gore's hitlist. Something that wasn't said enough yesterday was that Elvis the king took us half the way there and Prince carried the ball from there. In all the various Prince tributes I saw yesterday, not one quoted his risque lyrics.
Now morning, noon, and night I give you head
Till you're burning up
Head
Till you get enough
Head
Till your love is red
Head
Love you til you're dead
Music used to swim around in the field of censorship quite a lot. Now, hardly ever. Nowadays celebrity actresses take naked selfies, the culture has changed. Probably there are some out there right now reading the pipeline who still consider Prince an unhinged pervert or public menace. but what he is more than anything is a musical icon. The world changes, nowadays our kids have learned all about these things on the internet. Music and the field of music is about expression, that's not really in question anymore.
