YES! Absolutely! Without A Doubt!
There has been several songs throughout the history of recorded music
that touches people's emotions, and psyche',
and to them listening to a particular song at a particular point in their lives
may had changed the direction of the path in life they were previously on,
many for the better!
Well written lyrics, with a strong message, have been known to stop someone from committing suicide, or stop using drugs, or treating their loved ones better, and so on. To that person, that song was important!
It reached out to them personally at a crossroad and made them think to apply
that "advice" or "suggestion" in their lives.
It doesn't matter whether the song was a Pop song, a Country song,
a Christian/Gospel song, etc,.
What matters is the Words and how they reach someones heart and thoughts.
In a way, songs the listeners deem Important can be triggers for Important moments in their lives! Weddings, the birth of a child, the day they met the love of their life, or the lost of a loved one, whether by break-up, or death.
That song, listened today, takes them back to that Important moment in time.
I'd like to think I myself had written and recorded a song or two that someone took to heart and it helped them in one way or another. I think we all do as writers, to reach out to the masses and create a song that they can relate to, a song they will hear and feel it was written especially for them! That is why I write and record songs. So others can relate to and if I am told some of my songs had helped others at crucial times in their lives, then I know I've succeeded as a writer!

The alphabet song is important because it teaches kids the building blocks of reading and writing. Letters. And once a kid can read and write that kid can grow up with the ability to change the way people think. I would have to say that it is, perhaps, the most important song ever written. So my answer to your questions is - Yes!

'Eve of Destruction' by Barry McGuire was pretty important, too.
AND 'Do Re Mi' from Sound of Music.

Father Time,
I don't think anyone can pin down which is an Important song,
I think that depends on the listener on an individual level.
While certain songs do stand out as Important, for instance,
such as "God Bless The USA" that came out after and somewhat about 9/11,
but would it had been an important song had the tragedy not occurred?
Some may say "I Want To Hold Your Hand" was an important song because
1): It pulled America out of a national mourning following JFK's death
2): It introduced the new excitement in Pop music called The British Invasion
3): It was basically the "trigger" for many young lads to start their own bands, etc.
What may be considered important to some may not be to others.
Like food, certain songs are an acquired taste. :-)

When Dylan sang: "Your sons and your daughters are beyond your command", that was all I needed to reinforce my rebellious spirit and validate my efforts to do my own thing and not the thing my parents wanted me to do. Apparently many other kids felt the same way. I guess the song The Times They Are A'Changin' was (and is) an important song.

Dylan was one of the last pure folk artists and one of the first ones, and definitely the first significant one, who crossed over to the dark...I mean rock side. And back in those days, people were looking for meaning and guidance in their music. Today, not so much.

If a song is created by you then it was important enough regardless of what other people think of it.
I do think that a song can change moods, leave impressions, and cause people to think of things differently on occasion.
If the song finds one listener who truly loves it that is a great accomplishment.
The fact that you loved the song enough to nurture it, feed it, and grow it until it became a song that is created makes it important.

Can a song be important?
Can it change the way people think?
HELL YES IT “CAN”... naw, FUCK the “can”... IT “IS”!!!!!
IT “IS” VERY “Important”...
I believe!
I FEEL!
I “KNOW”!
“IT” ...a “song”
“IS IMPORTANT”...
“to CHANGE THE WAY I THINK!”
...and I’m “sorry” to say this “BUT”
I LIKE “MY” MUSIC!!!
I listen to it “HOURS AT A TIME”
I don’t care if “musicians” do not consider “my” “music” “Real Music”.
But I “DO CARE” if I am thought of as being someone who is “GAMING THE SYSTEM?”
I was going to answer “that” “there” under that particular thread...
But “THIS” was the better place of the two. THIS is the RIGHT place for it!
FYI : I have no stereo to speak of. When I crank it up it smells of burning. So, I listen to my music here at IAC(IMP). I haven’t had access to my computer for several days... going on the blip I guess. And by the grace of God I was FINALLY able to listen to IMP Player on my iPad... was up all night(since 10PM) streaming my music... ENJOYING EVERY MINUTE OF IT!!! And it would stop... and I would have to rewind... go forward... rewind... and FINALLY it would start playing again. My music is still playing RIGHT NOW AT THIS VERY MOMENT!!! SHAME ON ME!!! Right??? WTF??? If “me” “ENJOYING” listening to my music is thought of as “DEVIANT BEHAVIOR” then FUCK EVERYONE HERE!!!!!!! Just so EVERYONE KNOWS THIS! “WHEN I LISTEN TO MY MUSIC I AM LISTENING TO MY MUSIC. I GET MORE FROM THAT THAN LISTENING TO LED ZEPPELIN, JETHRO TULL, and QUEEN. And I am NOT BULLSHITTING! I still appreciate Elton John and the Smashing Pumpkins. I watch “The Voice”(oh, no!!!!) with my wife religiously. Recently, I was listening to Radiohead(good stuff) at a friends house because he said that he thought they sounded like “us”... FUCK IT!
95% of the lyrics in “our music” was written NOT AS LYRICS. I was pissed off and frustrated at the ignorance of the pastors and missionaries in my family... not to mention the church I stopped going to. I was pissed off and frustrated at the politics, vanity, and mundane bullshit in everything and everyone... including MYSELF! So, I wrote and I wrote and I wrote... filling only god knows how many notebooks with scribblings, drawings, plans, etc. I’ve got three satchel bags full of my writings... not to mention the Bibles I’ve written in, on and over and over.
I made a friend in 1989 who loved playing music. He wanted to use my writings as lyrics so from ’89 until 1999 we laid down hundreds of hours of stuff. More than half of my writings have never been spoken aloud... most of them that have been spoken aloud were done so by him, and sung live during our improves. So my “music” is the words and ideas that meant so much to me that I couldn’t stop myself from writing them down. If it weren’t for that friend of mine I’d NEVER BE ABLE TO REVISIT ALL THESE THOUGHTS AND MEMORIES FROM LONG AGO. NOT ONLY THAT, BUT THIS SITE TOO... IAC(now IMP)...IF IT WERE NOT FOR THIS SITE I’D HAVE “NOTHING”!!!!! Nothing to listen to! Nothing to reminisce! BBBUUUTTT!!!!!!!!!(Butt)
...I’ll be DAMNED if I let ANY OF YOU “make” me feel “GUILTY” for listening to “MY SHIT”! I am NOT “GAMING” ANYTHING! YOU CAN ERASE EVERY INCIDENT OF MY LISTENING TO MY MUSIC IF YOU WANT TO... YOUR PEROGATIVE, RIGHT?
JUST KNOW YE THIS ONE THING! WHEN I’M STREAMING MY ARTIST PAGE OF MUSIC IT IS “REAL”. YOU HAVE NO CLUE(wow! In fact “to be Real” has just now started playing... see there! FUCK YOU! I’ll stop now and listen to my music)!

Nuthin to feel guilty about! I can go on spurts of listening to my stuff, too. Multiple times. Mainly to laugh. Cause I like to laugh. And most of mine stuff is laughable. And i laughed when I wrote it. Then I laughed when I played it. Then I laughed when people listened to it.
I don't think that's what we were talking about on that thread.
Anyhow, multiple plays by the same IP don't count for charting puposes, so no one can accidentally inflate their stats. It's all good.

Cool, Dan...
I just hadn’t been able to get online here to play anything for several days due to my old PC having troubles...
Then for some reason my iPad, which has never been able to stream music here(nor my iPhone...) actually worked last night( both of them haven’t been updated in over two years... on the advice of friends saying NOT to do it unless I wanted to wind up purchasing new ones as they all had to do). I was so elated... I couldn’t believe my good fortune(been trying this off and on for several months during the last year and it never would work. I could logon, but could NEVER get anything to enter or work. So, FINALLY!!! Like an ACT OF GOD!!! Hurray!!!! But then every time I’d “black out” my screen the song wouldn’t transition to the next one. I’d “power-up and go forwards and backwards, get it to work and try “blackout mode” and it would lock up again. And then I tried it on 3G instead of WIFI and BAM! It streamed in “blackout” mode(meaning it wouldn’t drain down my battery while streaming. And then lo and behold my iPhone worked as well... switched it to 3G with the same effectiveness. “HALLELUJAH!” ...meaning I could now bring this to my friend’s house in the future and enjoy the Muse (we listen in his barn and he has no WIFI or computer there or in his home). Things are really looking up!
So, now I come into my “computer room” and spend several hours trying to get it up and running while streaming away on my iPad. Finally, after MANY hours of listening I might add, the computer is working. It is daylight outside(for several hours now) and I’ve been up since noon yesterday. I log in and message Scott about my days-long computer dilemma AND the iPad’s “Hallelujah-Moment!” Then I check into the Pipeline and noticed that “Thread” I mentioned... reading down a ways and thinking... WTF??? So, I checked my “stats” page(which I hardly EVER do... what’s the use!) and noticed that “ALL MY SONGS WERE SHOWING THEY HAD BEEN PLAYED... SOME OF THEM TWICE!” ...now “THIS” had never EVER been the case before! NEVER!!! So, I assumed that “all of that attention was being directed at me”... seemed logical at the time. Hell, I went from being on “Top Of The World”...until (by seeing all my songs showing as played) “The Pit Of Lowest Hell”. So, I “HOPE” I was wrong in that assumption. Because I would “NEVER” “EVER” “GAME” “ANY” SYSTEM”!!!! And trying to “Game” my stuff ahead of the more “real music” offered here would seem totally absurd to me... as “My Music” is a form of “ritual” more-so than “music” per se. -M-

I am not telling you what you can do nor what you should do nor do I blame you for listening to your creations if you so desire.
I am a little confused though you say this site is the only way you can listen to your songs? If you can't download them from your page yourself I'm sure if you asked the admins they could get the MP3 from you page and send them to you on hightail which is free to use.
Then you would have control of your mp3 and you could listen to your songs anytime you want even if you have no internet because you have the mp3 file. Just a thought.

Well, Well... TWO SILO... IT IS COMPLEX!!!!
I WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT “SITE ACIVITY” WAS A “GOOD THING”...
SOMETHING TO BE “DESIRED”... SOMETHING “SOUGHT OUT”...
“HOW CAN WE GENERATE SITE ACTIVITY!?”...”WE NEED SOME EXCITEMENT!!!”
AND NOW YOUR DESIRE IS TO FIND A WAY FOR ME TO LISTEN TO MY MUSIC “OFF SITE”????
WOULD YOU “RATHER” ME DO IT THAT WAY? IS “THAT” ANY WAY TO “SUPPORT” IMP?
MAYBE I AM WRONG...
SO, IS MY LISTENING TO MUSIC FROM IMP(13 HOURS OF IT) NOT OF “ANY VALUE”?
IS “THAT” NOT CONSIDERED “SITE ACTIVITY”???
LET US SAY I HAPPEN TO BE A FAN OF “YOUR’S”...
AND I LOVE ONE OF “YOUR” SONGS... LISTEN TO IT FIFTY TIMES A DAY...
FOR WEEKS ON END... WOULD “THAT” SORT OF LISTENING “COUNT”???
...OR WOULD THE PEOPLE “HERE” START TALKING, CONJURING, COMPLAINING, WHINING...
“OH MY GOD!!! THAT’S NOT FAIR!!!”... “NO PERSON COULD BE A “LEGITIMATE” FAN OF “THAT” MUSIC!” ...LET’S SEE HOW WE COULD MANIPULATE THINGS SO THAT THOSE LISTENS “NEVER COUNT”!
I ASSUMED THAT I’D BE MAKING “LEMONAIDE”(SITE ACTIVITY) OUT OF THE “LEMONS”(MY STEREO NOT WORKING)... GUESS THAT WAS WRONG OF ME. FORGIVE ME FOR THINKING THAT.
IT IS CLEAR TO ME NOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH IMP NOT HAVING TRUE “EXCITEMENT”
WHENEVER THERE “IS” SOME EXCITEMENT(TRUE AND HONEST EXCITEMENT) IT GETS SLAMMED!
I’VE GOT A TAPE DECK IN MY CAR... LISTEN TO “MY” MUSIC “EVERY TIME” I DRIVE...
SO, I GUESS I SHOULD GET IN MY CAR AND LISTEN SO THAT NO ONE GETS OFFENDED.

My point was that you said the site was the only way you had to listen so in my innocence I believed you and thought it might be possible that you actually don't have a physical copy of the file.
What I was trying to do was to help you to obtain a copy of your songs if you did not have it so that you could listen as you desire as I said regardless if you have internet or not.

...and Dan
Some of my stuff makes me laugh... Some of it makes me cry... Some of it makes me SCREAM OUT LOUD! ...I NEVER "listen" just for laughs though.
I cannot understand the thinking process here. If I get ten people to play one of my songs every day(apparently from a different IP address) to "fix" the numbers so my song gets "ranked" higher... what the hell does "THAT" actually do "FOR" me??? No one's "buying" the song... but "EVERYONE" would "BELIEVE" that "LEGITIMATE LISTENS" were occurring. BUT... if “I” make “LEGITIMATE LISTENS” to my songs it “NEVER COUNTS”! What about the old saying that you should “LEAD BY EXAMPLE”. If “I” don’t care enough about my own music that “I” wouldn’t listen to it every day, all day long... “WHY IN THE HELL SHOULD I COMPLAIN IF NO ONE ELSE DOES IT???” The way I see it if you want to “PROMOTE” your music then just “LISTEN TO IT!!!” The site here(IMP) should simply place an asterisk or marking of some kind which would “designate” any song’s “ranking” as “spurious”(meaning personal listening). It could be seen as a “Badge Of DisHonor”... mark these fucking songs by coloring them a different color or something. Most “legitimate” musicians would probably be “horrified” by such a “MARKING”. The “SNEEKY WAY” of doing things is to “DELETE AND OMIT LEGITIMATE LISTENS”. This is absurd! If IMP has the wherewithal to “OMIT” then certainly they could instead “MARK” these listens to “HIGHLIGHT” where they come from. I think that would solve the one problem “WITHOUT CREATING ANOTHER”(the “OTHER” being “LACK OF SITE ACTIVITY”)
BTW- my son listens to my music every day in his car going to and from work... do "THOSE" type of "LISTENS" "COUNT"?...and "IF" he were to listen via "OUR" site here they would be just as "NULL AND VOID" as in his car because it would be from the same IP address, right? Absurd!!!
...not to mention that while being here I’ve listened for hours to numerous songs from “other” artists... some of them I’ve listened to over and over again while posting them on Radio Stations... but all from the same IP address!
Anyway, “IF” being online at IMP for hours at a time playing my music does “NOTHING BENEFICIAL” for this site, then I understand perfectly well why I should just get my stereo back to working. –M-

I heard this argument from somebody else who plays their own songs a lot. If you want to play them, play them. but having a chart where anybody can pump themselves up to the top is lame. So we measure unique plays. Nothing says you have to ever even look at the charts.
I'd add that the charts fill a promotional purpose because somebody coming to the site who wants to listen to a particular genre generally is more likely to listen to songs at the top of that genre.

Psyche's Muse,
Personally I think its great that you enjoy your own music why wouldn't you?
I will agree that if I don't care enough about my own songs to listen to them I don't feel that anyone else would want to either. You also know I self promote quite a bit I have nothing against that.
Sadly in the world of technology it has made it not only possible but somewhat easy to "fake" plays.
Here is an example. I have a computer and lets say on this computer I open 10 browser windows all with the same song that I want to have a good rank.
I create a robot program that plays this song in 10 windows all day and all night long.
Lets say for easy math my song is 5 minutes long ok?
so at 10 windows playing the song 24 hours a day is 120 plays and hour * 24 = 2880 plays a day.
There is no way to tell legitimate plays vs non legitimate plays form the same IP without some kind of formula.
Most sites have created what is called a unique play. In most cases what qualifies a unique play is that the same song can't be counted if played more than once in a 12 hour period from the same IP.
This system may not seem fair but this same system of unique play generation is calculated across multiple sites and it truly is a way to prevent people from creating robot programs that play the songs and artificially inflate plays.
For this reason I also don't personally like it when artists or stations setup autoplay because it forces the song to start regardless of if the listener wants to listen to it or not.
IMP in my opinion has done a good job with the rankings and so false starts don't really hurt you. Listening to your songs does not really hurt you either but it also does not count for more than one play if you listen more than one time in 12 hours from the same IP.
The only way that I see this might be a problem but not really is lets say you have 10 computers in your house. Now each computer has its own IP on the internal network however when you hook those 10 computers to a router the internet only sees the external facing IP of the router not the IP of each PC and that is the internal network.
In this case you could legitimately have 10 PC all playing the same song which should count as 10 plays but won't because they all share the external IP of the router. I can't have an valid argument why some one would do that so its not really a valid point.
Two Silo Complex,
Ken

I completely disagree with this statement. - "...that if I don't care enough about my own songs to listen to them I don't feel that anyone else would want to either."
I 'live' my creations while I am creating them. Once they are finished I would rather concentrate on 'living' my next creation. It has nothing to do with "caring enough" about my creations. The number of times I choose to listen to my own music has nothing to do with how much I care. :)

So...
Let me ask you guys something...
...Let us say that "EVERY" artist logged in "EVERY" day and played "EVERY" song on their page...
Would this activity have "ANY SIGNIFICANCE WHATSOEVER" toward the financial viability of IMP as far as “INCREASED Advertisement Value”?
And... is the idea toward "MOTIVATING" people to log in and visit/interact/etc. a desirable thing “BECAUSE GENERATING SITE ACTIVITY IS A GOOD THING”(because this is what it takes to motivate an advertiser to advertise on our site)?
If so... don’t you think that we are going about "THE ISSUE"(i.e. site activity) all wrong... and shouldn’t we then be “ENCOURAGING” this type of activity instead of discouraging/shaming it?
...Of course if “THAT”(generating “INCOME” for IMP) is of NO CONCERN and/or the “activity” that’s been described above wouldn’t aid in that(generating income) endeavor then, OK! -M-

In this situation as you describe it there is no issue. For each song you played once every 12 hours per IP you will get a play so if you login twice a day at 12 hour intervals and play each song once per 12 hour time period you will get two plays per day per each song per day.
The issue if you call it an issue is that multiple plays don't count in stats but still do count as site traffic. There is nothing wrong with doing it you just not climbing the charts for it. If listening to your music is your motivation as you claim it is then not getting extra plays for extra clicks should not really be a problem should it?

Ken
