In my opinion, it's never too late to change. To be blunt about it, it's only too late when you die. Forgive the cliche, but where there is life there is hope. Change is only impossible when one loses hope. Hope is the fuel that keeps us going and gives us the ability and the opportunity to change.
Of course there are no guarantees that whatever changes one makes will be successful or satisfying. Life is tough, that's a freakin' fact! But if one makes no effort to change and overcome life's obstacles, then change and progress are unreachable.
John and Yoko's (Just Like) Starting Over was a song that really resonated because reinventing one's self is such a universal aspiration. Your post also made me think of a lyric by Rod Stewart:
I wish that I knew what I know now
When I was younger.
I wish that I knew what I know now
When I was stronger.
You can use what you've learned over the years to avoid certain paths you may have taken in the past that didn't work out and take a new road to get to where you want to go.
Dylan's "My Back Pages" also comes to mind:
Half-wracked prejudice leaped forth, "rip down all hate, " I screamed
Lies that life is black and white spoke from my skull, I dreamed
Romantic facts of musketeers foundationed deep, somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now
Good luck with your quest for change. You have all the tools to build a new foundation to stand on. Use them wisely, while you're still around.
