artists with personality, artists with charisma

Maybe I'm imagining this but it seems to me that most of the best artists have something compelling about their personality, and sometimes little things they do, album covers, promo blurbs, whatever, radiate somehow. Creative people, their intros are better, their endings are better, their musical decisions are more interesting.

True enough and fine points, all givens, but I think you have to admit not always the best music makes it, obvious right, we have seen enough examples of that, it is the entertainment aspect that is the thing these days and always has been, and that is what many have to do to make up for the lack of musical skills and expertise they might not have, a gimmick. some kinda schtick. but most of all, it is more then that. It is being committed persistent and being in teh biz for the long haul, I am talking about being a journeyman , and learning the business of music, reading, studying, learning the craft of connecting to people, pressing the flesh if I may use that term. Getting in the whole scene of publicity. it is more , way more then all those little things, and sure, some have great skill sets, but many who rise to the top have good people helping them craft and massage the music they make into something special. it means a lot if you have advocates who believe in you, and support your vibe. But you need VISION. and finding a way to get your art out there in a OCEAN of artists with so many clamoring for glory and fame, now if that is the driving force, to me that is the wrong motive.

But simply put as Todd stated it is the whole package, but it is more then the person, or personality, you need people to help you along the way. And that in itself is the challenge. surrounding oneself with the right people.

Want to learn about one mans experience working with artists, and like to read.

Check out this book : LISTEN OUT LOUD by RON WEISNER who managed Paul McCartney Madonna, ( you gotta read about her) and Michael Jackson and So many more like Gladys Knight and the bitchy whiner john mellencamp, people like Bill Withers and Curtis Mayfield...This book is a must read. do so if you have the time
anyways, it is time chance circumstance as the old saying goes, so you could be phenomenal as a musician, but if your entertainment ability aint there, you basically have no chance. you need to be first an entertainer, secondly a musician and perhaps a great performer, not all have that.

good topic. i could go on for hours, i have worked with a lot of artists who I thought should have made it, but it takes a lot of Money sometimes, investment in ones ambition and sticking with it. Those are all things we have heard here a million times

I agree. Although sometimes more often than not, the personality aspect fills in any other "hole" that the whole package is lacking. In other words if your music isn't that great , just act a damn fool lol !
