Is there such a thing as destiny?
Sometimes it seems that events in my life are predestined. Like the way you sometimes meet people who play important roles in your world. Recently I was looking for work in another area of the country and it amazingly turned out that the person and business I approached cold had a relationship with somebody from 2500 miles away who I had done work for so the opportunity just opened up for me. Coincidence?

Sometimes it is a small world. Sometimes carma has a way of evening things out and sometimes carma seems to let things slide. As for destiny I think that there are things that are intended for us but they are fluid not set in stone other events can alter this fabric. Say for example if you had not gone in another part of the country even when you thought you would then your destiny would have not included the person you meet that knew someone 2500 miles away. Since you followed that path then that destiny happened. I like to think of it as an endless series of doors when you open one door that leads to certain events if you open different door that door leads someplace else.
Also think even if yo choose a certain door that has certain events that can happen they will not necessarily always happen but they will happen if it is the right time to move you down the right path for one reason or another.
Hows that for saying nothing?

Yes, it was a happy coincidence. I believe that life is totally random but we try to make sense of it by imposing some kind of order to it with words like "destiny" and "fate". That's hard to accept for many people but it's like gambling. Gamblers believe that "luck" exists or that one can have a lack of luck. We look for patterns to give structure to meaningless trends because it makes us think we have control over random things. But you can't control where you were born or who your parents were or what your genetics are. You're stuck with those things and those things are extremely important to how the story of your life unfolds. You can try and change things that you're stuck with but it's difficult depending on what those things are. That's the challenge of life ~ playing the hand that you're dealt. Coincidences are abundant and sometimes they work out in your favor and sometimes they don't. Life is filled with surprises. If we allow ourselves to be open to being surprised and flow with the randomness of it all, we can live with unpredictability and not try to make sense out of nonsense. Revel in the good stuff that happens and don't let the bad stuff get you down or blame yourself when things go wrong. It's life and life only.

I kind of agree with you Richard that we try to make sense of things and put order to it.
If things were truly random as you suggested it would seem that coincidence would be less probable that seems to happen. I don't know that we can always explain events that occur by us making sense out of it. Sometimes events do occur at exactly the right time. At other times events happen that seem to make no sense at all. I think those events are caused by intersecting parallel lines that cross each other due to some unexpected change that altered events in an unpredictable way.
I'm not sure if I agree with you on the hand your dealt theory. There are many rock artist that had poor upbringing and end up famous. Now the hand your dealt can make it harder. If you are destined to be great you will likely be but you could choose not to be.
If you were not destined to be great yo can cause change of events to occur that will reshape your destiny to be great.
Destiny has endless possibilities millions of possible directions to go all at once. That which you choose to follow ultimately becomes your destiny.
I have a tattoo with the Chinese symbol for destiny. The tattoo is a crystal ball with a lake of fire held by an eagles claw. In the sky the night is changing to become dawn. It is my personal design. It means that each day we have the freedom choose to be like fire that destroys all life or we can choose to be like water which feeds all life. Each day that which we choose will becomes our destiny.

"Simple Twist of Fate"
They sat together in the park
As the evening sky grew dark
She looked at him and he felt a spark tingle to his bones
It was then he felt alone and wished that he'd gone straight
And watched out for a simple twist of fate.
They walked alone by the old canal
A little confused I remember well
And stopped into a strange hotel with a neon burning bright
He felt the heat of the night hit him like a freight train
Moving with a simple twist of fate.
A saxophone someplace far off played
As she was walking on by the arcade
As the light bust through a-beat-up shade where he was waking up
She dropped a coin into the cup of a blind man at the gate
And forgot about a simple twist of fate.
He woke up the room was bare
He didn't see her anywhere
He told himself he didn't care pushed the window open wide
Felt an emptiness inside to which he just could not relate
Brought on by a simple twist of fate.
He hears the ticking of the clocks
And walks along with a parrot that talks
Hunts her down by the waterfront docks where the sailers all come in
Maybe she'll pick him out again how long must he wait
One more time for a simple twist of fate.
People tell me it's a sin
To know and feel too much within
I still believe she was my twin but I lost the ring
She was born in spring but I was born too late
Blame it on a simple twist of fate.
