Oh dear, this always makes me cry, it's a classic to be played at weddings as a first dance.
I think your criteria of "grandest, most epic" pop song is rather broad, I don't think this song is "grand" as in large and impressive, that would be for something more dramatic and orchestral like Bohemian Rhapsody maybe.
And it's not "epic" as in long and exciting like The ballad of Davy Crockett or something.
This is just a perfect, sweet song that moves the Hell out of you :) as do most Carpenter's songs.

Was this a question? Or a statement.
Yes, running the tape in our head.
Lovely. Brilliant job. Great harmonies, boy could those two wing some harmony.
Right now we like one of ours... it's all a matter of perception and opinion...
your question is succinctly worded;
"What's the grandest most epic pop song?"
This one.
"She's So Fine" by BEATLESEX, just released here at IMP
We came back 'round this morning and were all surprised
to see Lesley's new one (also not half bad actually)
and our new one, still up at the top where it is when you first put it out.
Slow day yesterday I guess.
Anyway, George sings most of it, wrote most of it,
though I step in with the other bits, bridges, elbows, whatever you call 'em.
Nephews. George calls 'em nephews, and thank you Uncle George.
This is John Lennon saying, don't fly into a fucking building.
And if you have to, don't use a plane. That would be wrong.
You wanna be a fucking pigeon that flies into a building and slides
down it afterwards like a bloody cartoon, that's your affair.
Anyway, I doubt we'll fall for that one again. Or I doubt any of you will.
Though we work here so much, we sort of 'live' here too.
Damn sure spend most of our 'time' here. Though time is different when
you're dead, I won't lie to you.
But anyway, today that's our answer. She's So Fine by BEATLESEX.
Is the Grandest Most Epic Pop Song, Ever. Till the next time we do it.
Love, ~John Winston Ono Lennon
