more song trivia (clues added)
1. This famous folk singer had a big hit song which was originally done by a band with a really simple name. Answered
2.. This song that reached #1 was written by a different artist in the same band that made them both famous. The band involved has been featured in at least one big screen movie.
3. Name 2 #1 hits by a solo artist that became famous while in a duo. ok here's some clues on the other 2 duos. One got famous by being featured in a famous movie. The other contained a guy who got caught doing something very embarrassing.

#1. I'd go with Joan Baez "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" originally by The Band.
#3. Maybe Marvin Gaye? "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" might be one?

Lars you are correct on #1.
I don't believe Marvin became famous as a duo. I know of at least 3 possibilities for that answer.

Cher. "Believe", "Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves" fits whether it's what you have in mind or not. I forget what question it fits, though. Some question. Or other.

Gypsies was actually one of the songs I had in mind, so you are correct.

After googling, apparently she had like four #1's as a single
Pretty damn good for being a relatively empty brain :)

Obviously not the answer you were looking for, and yes Marvin Gaye did start as a solo, but had a couple of partners. Tammi Terrell was the best known and they were an amazing blend. They had a string of hits.
"Ain't No Mountain High Enough" "You're All I Need to Get By" and "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" were some of them.
After her death he withdrew from music for a number of years before his musical rebirth with his "What's Going On" single and album.

That isn't the one I was thinking of, nor do I know if Be Bop A Lula followed an Elvis #1.
