Do you feel a yearning?
hi, I'd like to introduce myself. I'm Russ. I was told I can speak my mind here and that's what I intend to do.
I keep thinking there must be something more to this whole internet music thing. Maybe my heart beats too fast but I have trouble handling all the contentment I see from people. I want to see passion, action, something someone exploding.

Hi Russ, I hear what you're saying and it seems no-one is rushing to defend the status quo so I'll offer an explanation from an observer's perspective.
With all due respect, I assume from what I've seen and heard here that the artists are mostly middle aged, maybe even older. Although there is no age limit to talent, passion tends to find a happy medium with a "Been there, stayed there" attitude. The 'new to the scene' musician (and music site) will still have belief in the system with hope, passion and energy but little knowledge.
There is an invisible line from total lethargy to extremism, from reality to unreality if you like ; if you're bipolar you slide between the two but most musicians hover in the middle of the road trying to stay out of trouble while the fast lane guys zoom past.
You may be happier at a site with a younger demographic, somewhere where passion is still in its first flush. Maybe this place is on the up again, last time I was here it was more fast moving but it was also a bit of a battle ground at times with opinionated anons and disruptive elements as I remember.

hi Russ
welcome glad you dropped in.so what do you have to offer to change that what you speak of?
I dont think it is just contentment though, in music, and in life as well, I think it is perhaps a reflection and the way we are in our society,(western society) I think it goes deeper then that too, although some people may be content, happy like where they are, doing the music they do. or maybe that is just the way things are,. I think it it is more like apathy, complacency and lack of caring to really change things. Who knows? Its a big subject you brought forward ,perhaps you could be more specific of what you are talking about, expand upon it. What do YOU want to change about it all, if that is the way you feel. what are YOUR suggestions to make things different in this area. Easy to observe and give a thought, harder to actually step up and do something about it. You have some passion, action songs or know of someone that fits your description and or expectations . Cheers man

I guess it's a feeling that I'm ready to move into more dynamic pastures. Yet if I do, I'll be on my own.

Ansel, folks here aren't as old as you think. For instance, I'm only 86.

I have a song I wrote over 10 years ago that starts : "Am I getting older or is life getting younger around me. They say you get better with age and that still astounds me." I wrote that for my father. My father was a professional musician and of course I followed along too.
I stopped to raise my kids properly for 20 years but kept on writing. Now, some of my own best work I believe is yet to come. I'm 58. I still do live gigs and bounce around on stage like I'm still 25 plus coach my grandsons little league team and still work my 40hrs a week.
Shit! It seems the older I get, the more there is to do.
God help you kids when I retire, cause you'll be keeping up with my ASS!!

My auntie (Grace) is a music teacher and she has so much passion even after 30 years in the job she has out of hours clubs and helps young musicians to get gigs and record. She also writes modern Pop and Rap songs. She doesn't do much online however. So what I'm saying is it's nothing to do with the current music scene, you can have passion at any age and in any place or circumstance if you really put the effort in.

After you have exploded a billion times (speaking from experience, believe me) you just stop talking about it online and every where else actually. Don't mistake this for contentment. When the same yearning has burned inside of you for an eternity with no let up and no cooling off, then get back to me.

Thanks Bryon - I hope this doesn't seem argumentative - and I love the Pipeline just because you get to know how other people feel. We all learn from each other for sure - anyway that's been my experience here :)

So you're saying that the fire has raged for a long time and now you're quiet about it. That's interesting. Did you ever hear of these people who have spontaneously combusted ? You can probably relate to that I'm guessing.

People can be passionate about things at any age. I think age is a state of mind. One can believe the stereotypes of what people of certain ages are like or they can get to know people for who they really are. Some folks explode externally. It can be cathartic for them personally and/or cause collateral damage to others as many explosions do. Some people explode internally and they direct all that energy towards a positive end - for themselves and/or for others. I guess you can call it a "controlled explosion". But that doesn't mean those people are content or satisfied with the status quo. I don't think anyone is truly "content". Everyone is pissed about something but they have different ways of dealing with it, least of which is their age.
Sometimes middle age or older people might be able to cope with life a little better than they used to simply because it is futile to waste energy on futility. That's a lesson learned from living a while but many people in this age bracket are even more passionate than they were when they younger because they know that they have less time to achieve their goals so they try harder. They work like their lives depend on it because often that is the case. Sometimes youthful energy can be misdirected and sometimes it's directed perfectly as with the young Beatles.
But I still must refer back to my earlier statement. It's not accurate to make generalizations about passion and contentment based on age alone. Sometimes explosions are tempered by experience and wisdom. Sometimes being young is the ultimate window for opportunity but some gain success later on in life.. We all have to accept whatever stage we're at in life and make the best of it. There are pros and cons to being any age. But being goal oriented, imaginative, courageous, outrageous, experimental and passionate will take you far regardless of your age. I'm never content with my work. I always want it to be better. Don't mistake an appearance of "contentment" with complacency. Silent explosions can be as powerful as loud ones and easier on the ears too!
I hope I haven't misunderstood the concept behind this thread. Perhaps with a few more details I could write a more coherent opinion!
Anyone of any age can be a jerk or a genius. It's not your age that counts. It's who you are. It's not the new pastures that make you more dynamic ~ it's the inner drive that makes any terrain more exciting. Good luck!

Silent explosions. This reminds me of a story. I was living in a trailer on the beach and my girlfriend and I hung out with this girl named Linda. Linda was older than us and rather lustful. She always had some new guy she was fooling around with. My girlfriend and I went north to get married and when we got back, Linda confessed that she had broken into our trailer to fool around with one of her guy friends. We didn't mind, one of the slats was out in the door and it was an easy break-in. But I digress. Linda was telling us some story about how she took some guy home the night before and we knew she lived with her mom and I asked her a nosy question as I tend to do, doesn't it bug you to make noise when your mom is in the next room, and I'll never forget what she said. "We can have a lot of fun without making a sound." I've thought about that a lot over the years, not sure why.

Good point Russ! And yes I can relate to that spontaneous combustion. I've lived with that type of person - the real thing - they explode till it kills them. Obviously that person just took it too far. I don't think you were talking about death and destruction in your post haha. The good thing is it all comes out in the music whatever type you are, it's all worth it to have the tunes exist. Being a musician is the best thing there is.

Nice post Russ---look at the replies already generated.
I can fit on both sides of the old muso / young muso comparison, I have played all my life, now I have studio where younger musicians can write, record, produce, and get their music out there without re inventing the wheel.(start from scratch)
Most of these guys are not expecting to be the next big thing, as I make sure their feet are still on the ground.
I wish there was more political / protest music coming through, peeps expressing their opinions about the shitty deals we are being spoonfed by our various Governments---there is passion with a capital P !!!!
"I wanna be famous" is not passion IMO
