PC Blues
Can't be doin' with fiddly keyboards and tiny screens, not conducive to creativity at all.
PC Blues
I used to sit with pen in hand beside a page of white
Waiting for an arty muse to lift my grounded kite
But now I see a keypad is waiting for my touch
Is inspiration coming? I have to say "Not much"
There's something about paper and ink that freely flows
I love to scribble, cross things out, watch how the story grows
But little soulless letters upon a glaring screen
Have made me quite robotic with a mind like a machine
I have a stack of papers that promote the written word
The ink is slowly fading, the message old and blurred
One day someone might find me buried deep inside these piles
But I doubt that anyone will check my old computer files

Well done :), I found an old stash of poetry/ditties and the ink actually had faded to transparent, oh well, much like the data saved to 6 terabytes of backup drives here no one will ever see or hear.

I tried to imagine writing lyrics on a pc, and I just wouldn't, I couldn't. Part of the fun, inspiration and practicality along with plain old fashioned artistic aesthetic requires spiral notebooks or composition books or envelopes, the backside of misprints, napkins, doodles and scribbles, scratched out lines, beer and coffee stains, crumpled frayed and dog eared and double or triple commandeered with dates and gibberish...
Of course, sometimes I can't read my writing. And I love writing blogs. Typing on this fucking phone, however,.. Ugh.

Never have never will. I do exactly what Noah Spaceship says, pieces of paper, anything around I grab even a few times inside a music book. a calender. now after wards yes, once everything has been done and finished, but not always, I still have stuff jammed in a folder or even lost sight of ideas i had perhaps in my piano bench still to this date. So now I have a couple sheets of paper about or try to if something pops into my head, but again, i dont focus on lyrics that much, i am more of an instrumentalist. thats my strong point. always has been

I don't get it at all. You guys sound like old people that are afraid of technology or afraid that technology will impact your creative edge. Well, I am a genuine old fart and I am so thankful for my Mac and my PC's. I write lyrics on them all the time and there really isn't any difference for me other than I have more options in regards to font size and style. Now, if am out somewhere and I get an idea, instead of looking for a pen to write it down, I pull out my trusty hand held recorder and record the lyrics I have in mind. Not saying that my way is better, just saying that there is nothing wrong with people who have embraced technology in order to enhance their writing experience. I have file cabinets full of handwritten lyrics from way back in the 50's/60's to the mid 80's when I bought my first word processer (the grand dad of the PC). I don't miss the old days at all and with my arthritic hands, writing lyrics on paper would be very painful. The only thing that I am willing to grin and bear the pain with are my guitars, keyboards, horns and on a really good day, my drum set. But it is so much easier for me to just pull up a file on my computer or create a file and store it on my computer and my back up data system. But hey, I am a retired Silicon Valley Manager. Computers are my best friends. The bottom line? It's not how you get it done that counts, it is how good it is when you finish that counts. Millions of great songs have been hand written on paper. Millions on computers. There is no difference as the written word is the written word regardless to the method. The main thing is to just keep writing!

wait a minute, wait a whole darn minute. maybe two.talking about using keyboard/computers and other helps. not just peices of discarded paper, or a sheet of it. Of course i use the computer, if there are lyrics, and or i score it out on the thing using various software programs or manually write it out score it out the old slow hand way like Mozart and Beethoven did. now,if I have an idea for a song. sometimes i have my Zoom Q3 ready or my h2 and they bot are running as I sit at the piano, working with a progression, and dabble perhaps some melody out. whether it is classical or pop or rock.now With me at times is my pad music manuscript paper if I can find it buried under other stuff about. but for ideas it is a lot of times improvisational for just music that comes to my mind and i just go, play and develop something as I am working at the piano, sometimes I do an entire song at one sitting and have no score, i just play, some of my best works have been that way, .for me it is all about acoustic stuff, and the organic quality that my pianos offer, that is of course my specialty, now, I use the Zoom Q3 vid or Zoom H2 when I play something and they are rolling. and i may sit in my studio for 15 minutes or it could be two hours just working various ideas out. Some I take and work into my software programs and do the best I can with they building tracks. But 90 % of the time it is the piano who is my best friend,. and i am sticking by it. but i do use the computer to draft out lyrics and sometimes writing music. just depends. there , now that is my update and answer

Shit, I love my computer(s) and I love typing. I transfer all my lyrics that I use in music to 0&1s. I also enjoy being called a crusty old fart too. Compliment accepted Stoneman,

I like it better when Noah goes on a rant. or explains himself exponentially can i use that in that sentence? maybe I like Noah Spaceship better when he expounds his reasoning and explains things in detail. . but I guess more is less. I did my big bluster of explanation and he did his succinctly , i am jealous , but maybe he is using his smartphone and has limited access to the internet. speaking of internet access. my provider, Shaw just increased their rates recently for the 3rd time in about 16 months. i am now paying $70 a month just for internet access, i have nothing else, no special other stuff. that folks is a rip off. There are two other providers in Canada Bell and Telus and their is a new kid on the block WIND there are others, but the big three just roll in the dough. i hope someday things change. thats too much money $840 a year

What I'd like to know is what's with these people who haven't picked a personal symbol yet, is this a technological issue? :)

Stoneman, you mentioned the handheld recorder before, and I think that's a great idea, btw.
