Play what you want, don't give in to social pressure

Play what you want, don't give in to social pressure
I have friends who are moderately successful, good musicians, I used to play with them and it was fun in the early days. Now they're not fun so much, they're bitter and depressed because they never hit the big time and they're still stuck in regular day jobs to pay the bills.

My friends (well ex friends mostly) always felt they deserved to be big Rock stars and the music industry owed them a living.

Even now they play whatever style of music is hot rather than what they're actually passionate about. They copy the musicians they want to be instead of just being themselves. They treat their peers with contempt and try to suck up to influential people.

For artists like them it's all about being famous, hanging out in the IN places and exaggerating their importance and success. They brag about where they’ve played, the bands they’d opened for, which radio station played their song, which festival they got invited to play at. It's sad and shallow and gets stale after a while. I wish they'd just accept they've been luckier than most if fame was their aim.

They clawed their way out of the bedroom. I prefer to stay in my bedroom playing what I like and listening to what I enjoy.

I used to be like them but I'm glad that I gave up my day dreams and not my day job.

People should play the music they love because they want to and because they can’t imagine not playing it.

Totally agree - not to mention some people have gotten lots of recognition by creating music in the bedroom and uploading it to Youtube. Actually I'm wondering if the odds of success are about the same these days.

I have to say, I have had limited success in the music world, nothing substantial, not famous never will be at this stage in my life. Yes, i have had my songs on the radio, probably because I know the business of promotion because that is one thing i do for other artists, and have helped out many who i have represented on my voodoohead roster over the years. I worked hard at learning the business, and that music landscape has changed dramatically since I first immersed myself into it. Mostly it has been about others, not so much about me and my music, but about 9 years ago I started to dabble a bit more and started playing and writing songs. I think I have learned a lot in the last 16-17 about the whole business and now I have pulled back on the whole promo thing, have a few artists on my roster, not so much as in the past and am trying to get my own groove and vibe out there.

I still work my magic when the moment comes and i feel inspired, i rely mostly on a spur of the moment thing, a lot of my songs are impromptu and improvisational. I go to the piano and dabble, then something magical occurs and a song develops. Sometimes it just flows out when i sit down and I just play till the feeling for that particular moment leaves, sometimes I play for 30 solid minutes or more and i have a load of different songs from that one sitting, all piano instrumentals of course.

Once in awhile I write a thought down and expand it into something lyrical and plunk away and record it on my H2 or video it on my Zoom Q3, sometimes i get more elaborate and lay down parts on my synth do some drum patches and do a whole production thing. Still learning, that began about 9 years ago making songs and producing and building the tunes, got a long ways to go.

Sometimes I work with other musicians, on collabs, fun times. Recently i did a big production on my 2nd album and had some mighty fine wonderful players on it. Kick Back Just Relax, I have a station with all my songs on it which I recently recorded. The tunes have recently been picked up by a small label who is working them in the newer streaming business , radio seems to be fading away as a way to get your vibe out there, so this was a Godsend. More people of all ages are streaming music now, with their various smartphones ipads whatever else
That was a gift to get something like that happen, i feel proud of my accomplishments here at IMP with those I do collabs with and with my own piano music and my recently nicely produced music with so many awesome musicians

good luck

Two rather different responses, the first person sounds more like me now, the second sounds more like how I used to be and a little like my old friends still are. I guess it's strange to be promotional for others while still having a more casual approach with your own music.

Its exciting when you see others achieve some bit of success and even more so when you see it happen to yourself even if it is in a little way.

The main thing though is i serve others, and love to see them succeed, a couple of groups I couldnt help anymore, they needed more then what I could do and offer as a one man promo show, so they have labels , they tour in OZ Europe and the USA. i could not have done that for them, i laid the ground work and others came on board and brought them to a different level

anyways, it is strange to be in the biz (in a small way now) and do your own promo and get little wins. I think it is something I do because i love it, play the music i like from my heart soul and being and give joy to other people who like what i do

cheers and happy new year to all

And I would add that Bryon is unique among promoters, because he doesn't expect everyone to sound alike or like a current cookie cutter trending style. His artists are diverse and with an edge of originality, I've noticed.

Truth! Gotta play what you love. No point in doing it any other way. Some peeps are good being side players, or playing in copy bands, but if you are a true creative artist, doing anything less than is simply... less than!
