LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -
International Sandwich Day hit us last week, and with it developed a controversial question: Is a hot dog a sandwich? It’s meat and bread, right?
We just had to get some opinions on this one.
When you have to get the tough questions answered, you go to an expert. Hot Dog Express in Longview seemed like the logical place to start. So I asked customer Morgan Young from Carthage.
“What do you think it is?” I asked Morgan.
“It’s a hot dog. I don’t believe it’s a sandwich,” he replied
“So there’s a difference?” I asked.
“Yes, sir I believe there is,” he offered.
Hot dog lover Randall Latch gave me an interesting perspective.
“A hot dog is a hot dog. It is not a sandwich,” Latch said.
“So what makes it a hot dog?” I asked him.
“A hot dog is on a bun. A sandwich is on two slices of bread,” he said.
“Okay, but what about a hoagie sandwich? That’s on a bun.” I said.
“Yeah, but it’s two pieces. A hot dog bun is a one piece bun,” he said.
“A one piece bun versus a two piece bun, Now that is very logical, and that makes a lot of sense. So what are you eating?” I said.
“I’m having a hot dog, not a sandwich," Latch laughed.
“Now what if you took your hot dog, cut it up and put it on bread?” I asked Latch.
“Then I’d have a weenie sandwich,” he replied.
I took the question to Hot Dog Express owner Larry Bolton.
“Is a hot dog a sandwich?” I asked him.
“I would say no, since we have a National Hot Dog Day along with a National Sandwich Day,” Bolton replied.
So the setter of the days has spoken whoever that is. Maybe I need to kick it up a notch by asking someone in Washington DC. Like Janet Riley, President of the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council.
“In the old days there are some references to hot dog sandwiches, sausage sandwiches, things like that. But the hot dog has taken on such a life of its own here in American culture that we think it’s gone beyond the mere word 'sandwich,'” Riley stated.
So there you have it. The president has spoken. I guess every hot dog has its day.
National Sandwich day is November 3, but according to Janet Riley, Hot Dog Day is the third Wednesday in July, so it has a sort of Thanksgiving thing going on there.

Is a hot dog a sandwich.
I've been biding my time until someone asked that very important question!
It is, if it is in a roll. If you're simply holding it over a flame,
and wolfing down the little darlin', then no, it then is no longer a sandwich.
As for gyro, again, the argument seems based in, 'if bread is on either side
of whatever it is, boom, it's a sandwich'... so, a gyro then, in a pita?
Yes, that could be called technically a sandwich. Technically.
Of course, some people get their gyro on rice or something.
I prefer a pita myself, but it's a big world with many viewpoints.
Now,
here's an interesting turn of the question:
If two men, at one time, make love to the same woman,
is that a sandwich?
Answer: That's up for argument, but it might be fun at any rate.
Maybe. I imagine.
