I thought America has 50 states, what gives?
They keep talking about Puerto Rico being American but it's not a state, is it? On top of that they're always talking about the state of Washington DC but I thought that wasn't a state either. Please state the truth here, why do they keep switching up shit?

Puerto Rico (and Guam and the US Virgin Islands) are US TERRITORIES. They don't have the same rights as full statehood (citizens cannot vote, for instance), but they ARE still a part of the US.
Wash DC, however... is also not a state, and they have no representation in Congress, but they can vote for President in the national elections.
