just some ramblings
Hi,
I'd like to introduce myself. I'm a bit of a voyeur and I've been overthinking things for 37 years now, back to when I was 3 years old and started to think at all.
I notice IMP is struggling a bit with their Golden Kayak thing and I wonder if they can even expect independent artists to care about anything outside their own music? I mean, it's not the 60s, is it? Those other sites referred to as corporate, maybe part of their charm is that artists can stash their music and just let it thrive. Who needs communities except for people like me who like to read insane blogs and such? Is there any bigger turnoff in the world than somebody trying too hard? I don't think administration for this site is going to succeed with their efforts, the indie scene is dead since 2002 or so. Sites like this one are basically obsolete and that's why most of their new members seem to disappear after they upload songs.
Someone once posted somewhere that you get out of indie music what you put into it, but this world doesn't have a lot of folks who get involved anymore. They're very detached and that's how they're going to stay, forget about the Kumbaya days.

hey intellectual. thanks for your thoughts. An interesting post
As for the Golden Kayaks and people getting onboard, well all that will happen in good time, let it ride, it will all pan out in good time. This Voting thing is like cramming for exams, people are prone to doing that, you see a lot of us have jobs, family and many other interests beside showing up here 24/7 wondering why there are not many people getting involved, we are busy, with living, trying to survive holding body and soul together.
Wait a damn bloody minute, sometimes I do that,it seems like I show up here 24/7 I get so involved I forget about other things I should be doing, so what am I saying. I probably spend too much time here myself, but thats ok, there is enough music here and fun times making acquaintances, building online friends and working with other musicians doing collabs. people I have never ever met. I have enjoyed that part of it immensely, working with other musicians and those who hear my music and want to participate, or invite me to work with them, I am honored to work with such good people and those who make music for the love of it, without any other thought but to do something they have a passion for
I have a lot more I said and will leave it for another time, and save those thoughts for posting later, or not, but not to worry, there are enough of us who love this place more then you could ever know, all will be fine and things will work out just you wait and see.
talk later, and all things here will be fine, it is Christmas time and folks are busy getting ready for that, its the time of good cheer , comfort and joy and all that busy time of year, very busy.
have a merry christmas and a happy new year.

Some encouraging words there, appreciated Bryon. I hope you're right. The thing is, all one needs to do is vote for songs they like and are familiar with, they don't need to fill out every space on the nomination form.
I think the "Intellectual" is a bit cynical.

Yes, cynical is the word.
...but, this is nothing new to imply that once things in the indie world thrived more so than now. The truth is, the indie world thrives more now than ever. Corporate music biz is isolating itself in pop and more people than ever have home studios and create their own music.
There never was Kumbaya days. Give it few years and those involved here now will look back at 2015 as Kumbaya days though, because that's how it always works.
37 years and still a fucking greenhorn. You will learn, Keep hanging out at IMP, Opie, your snot still runneth from your nose.

Hi, well there are forces in play...
Here's a relevant excerpt lol...
"I've heard youngsters use some of George Lucas' terms––"the Force and "the dark side." So it must be hitting somewhere. It's a good sound teaching, I would say.
The fact that the evil power is not identified with any specific nation on this earth means you've got an abstract power, which represents a principle, not a specific historical situation. The story has to do with an operation of principles, not of this nation against that. The monster masks that are put on people in Star Wars represent the real monster force in the modern world. When the mask of Darth Vader is removed, you see an unformed man, one who has not developed as a human individual. What you see is a strange and pitiful sort of undifferentiated face.
Darth Vader has not developed his humanity. He's a robot. He's a bureaucrat, living not in terms of himself but of an imposed system. This is the threat to our lives that we all face today. Is the system going to flatten you out and deny you your humanity, or are you going to be able to make use of the system to the attainment of human purposes? How do you relate to the system so that you are not compulsively serving it? . . . The thing to do is to learn to live in your period of history as a human being ...[b]y holding to your own ideals for yourself and, like Luke Skywalker, rejecting the system's impersonal claims upon you.
Well, you see, that movie communicates. It is in a language that talks to young people, and that's what counts. It asks, Are you going to be a person of heart and humanity––because that's where the life is, from the heart––or are you going to do whatever seems to be required of you by what might be called "intentional power"? When Ben Knobi says, "May the Force be with you," he's speaking of the power and energy of life, not of programmed political intentions.
... [O]f course the Force moves from within. But the Force of the Empire is based on an intention to overcome and master. Star Wars is not a simple morality play. It has to do with the powers of life as they are either fulfilled or broken and suppressed through the action of man.

Continued thoughts that I had on my original post but left it till now, I had it in my word for later,
So Mr. the intellectual.....you say most indie sites including this one are obsolete, I think IMP is more relevant today then it ever has been, sure there are possibly fewer people involved as ones participating, but there has been a significant increase in new artists and established ones coming onboard due to Scott's efforts and drive to raise the awareness of the site and what it has to offer, frankly nothing comes close to this and even holds a candle to the quality of artists, interaction and opportunities ,opportunities to make this place even better by offering ways and means to help it out rather then be negative or have a jaded attitude. now I admit, I have had my issues here, and have been a pain in the ass with my actions of the past, but at least I stuck with it and continued my efforts to support the site in the best way I know how, station building and doing artist reviews
The administration fro this site
well I think it will succeed, you know why because we have someone who knows how to market and promote it, and has enough know how to push it forward and and is a team builder, Scott is a visionary and a driving force behind the sites climb to becoming more relevant. And this place has a great amount of knowledge in the technical end of things.
==============================================
Now to my previous thoughts that i was going to post beforehand
So here are my ramblings and I will probably go all over the map in response to your post.
Mr Intellectual, I found your post somewhat condescending, even arrogant and possibly pushing the envelop of thinking you have your finger on the pulse of this site and know more about it then you really do.
You know the history of this place quite well it seems , but without the hope and value I place on it and many others who reside here and come here often, so there is the great divide and difference right there, one who has hope and one who gives up too easily or perhaps high expectations and therefore is disappointed by the lack of input, are not most humans sheep, followers onlookers or as in this place, lurkers looking for some distraction of some sort to keep Themselves entertained.
Most people are expecting others to take the lead and wanting things done for them without themselves having to sacrifice, yes they are , and there is nothing wrong with that, not all of us can be leaders, not all all us possess those skills and abilities that set us apart .
It concerns me when something like this gets posted, but then maybe it is a good thing, because there are those like me who will come to its defense , because honestly I think you are so off base, you might as well be sending this from Jupiter with your iPhone LOL , you say we or some or many are detached and into themselves . hey this is a disease of the modern age we live in, aren't we all ego maniacs who show up here and ramble on like we know it all and maybe so self indulged, , and everyone can say whatever they damn well please as we are a bunch here that love to share our thoughts about most anything, and that is a good thing.
For me, this is a good place for listening to music outside the realm of everyday life and everyday music you may hear on youtube, soundcloud reverbnation and terrestrial radio and those corporate driven entertainment entities which have no other ambition then to make money, and that is fine, because it is all about the business,
I dont think you are in the circle of knowing much of what is going on here, otherwise you would not have started this blog and if you are, well then you dont know the heart of us who do believe and cherish this place and our fellow musicians and IMPers.
I am really invested as a believer in IMP, and there are many others who are not only believers but supporters financially in a big way who have managed to help keep this site afloat as well as post blogs such as you have, and a hard core group of us who have stations featuring artists in the many types of genre we are so lucky to have and listen to.
As for me well I get my fill besides listening to music here or cds eps that I get in the mail from people who want me to check their vibe out, you see whether you know it or not, and you probably do if you are as involved or as intellectual as you come across in this post. Maybe this will change your mind and perhaps have you re-evaluate your position and take up the mantle of supporting this place as the majority of us do
cheers to all of us who are making the site IMP the best place to be on the planet for the indie artist
Merry Christmas and a happy new year

Steve, I thought when you were talking about the evil force, you might be referring to the issues of the previous administration, the exaggerated stats, the money issues. The thing I often wonder about is why folks who were so involved back in the years 2005-2007 just won't come back and get reengaged here. Folks like Maria Daines, Auset, and so on. I've asked them and both said they would, just didn't bother. I wonder if we're in part permanently cursed by the failings of I.A.C.

I am referring to the larger society-at-large, like Joseph Campbell was referring in above passage. I view I M P like an oasis, a little oasis, but still an important oasis, with potential, if an artist is thirsty for a platform/exposure/imput/camraderie.
Thinking aloud, I think IAC reciv'd much overflow from garageband when it closed down, a site with a huge following before it closed, and 2005-2009 flourished with the overflow, who gradually got older, and redistributed their priorities and time. Youth should be pickin' up the slack, fresh energy, views, however, perhaps there's a fatalism around now, like 'why bother'?
I'd imagine the glitzy shows like "The Voice" are huge turn offs to potential, authentic artists. People get older and move on.
Having said that, I M P remains standing, and still with potential to "crack the code," and provide/offer a platform so noteworthy, enticing, and inviting, folks with gifts will find it difficult to refuse. 'Hope is the thing with feathers..."

Scott you know much more than anyone else here about the health of the site and I would not worry about any IAC curse. You have built this place on nothing but real blood sweat and tears and it angers me to see a few words by the intellectual question your resolve and the integrity of this place. Here are some words of truth for you to consider.
Without you Scott this place would not exist period. You build it and continued building it even when it hurts. You sir are a model of what this world needs more of dreamers who do more than dream but get off there ass and do something about it. Someone who cares enough about indies that the failure of IAC was too much to bear so this place was born. You sir are a guiding light in a dark and lonely realm and call us indies home. Those who head the call are more grateful than we can put in words.
The Intellectual I wonder exactly what was the point of your post if this is a lost cause then why did you bother? If you hoped to spur action again why would you when you said that the time has already been lost. Did you just stop by to point a finger and laugh? Well if you did you can go fishing for dingle berries in your backside and enjoy the fresh made fudge dig it? If you think we are lost then don't waste your valuable time on us join greater sites that meet your lofty ideals and may they welcome you. Now if you want to help build this place by all means please participate. What we don't need is rock throwers. Don't be so sure that the ice is solid where your standing the cracks are starting to show. It would be wise for you not to be around when it breaks.

TSC,
I think the OP reacted to my post on the other thread about Golden Kayak Nominations being slow to come in. Nothing he said made me doubt the mission, I've wondered for awhile now why some people I was sure would return here just haven't, some of my facebook friends for instance. If anything the site is much more upfront than it was back then, what is offered for free goes deeper as well.
Thanks for the kind words though, appreciated..

I think peeps are far more preoccupied with what the hell they're going to get the wifey to keep her from subtly CUTTING THEIR BALLS OFF than with what's going on in the virtual world right now.
Possibly this would have better been held in January? Nobody asked MEMEMEMEME though.
Also, a critical mass is necessary for this type of contest to be fully successful.
Pretty simple really. It's not the end of the world if 20 people are doing this right now.

Well some people just move on period or have resentments or other past issues or obligations that prevent them from coming back. Once the offer has been made let those who have it decide and continue focus on reaching out to other new artists.
I know I am not good for much but I could not sit by and let the intellectual take shots this community. We may all be battle wounded but yet we stand. As for me I never imagined coming back after IAC but here I am. Don't loose hope those that are lost may yet return.

I don't think participation in the voting for the awards should be taken as some kind of barometer reading for participation on the site and the rising or falling of indie music sites in general. I LOVE IMP. I love the pipeline. I love the stations. I have met musicians online here that I truly admire and respect and whose music is amazing. I would never have come in contact with them otherwise. I do know I haven't had the time in the past few weeks (our whole operation has been down and we've been trying to get things up and running again) to really get into it and find and vote for the best on site. But I don't think it shows a lack of support for what's happening day to day around here. And I'm totally interested to see who does win and check out their music.

You know... I was going to avoid this post...
I didn't wanna let loose a stream of God only knows...
Scott, look at this post as a blessing in disguise because as you see,
it gives occasion for us to reassure you, lest there be any doubt.
I have my wariness in general about intellectuals; more often than not,
they're more into their own thoughts and feeling smug about how lofty
they perceive themselves, that you almost do better to go to an idiot
and ask him or her.
And as God Is My Witness, I AM THAT IDIOT.
So let me make this simple... I'm not looking towards 'character assassination',
but may I point out to you all,
the photo this 'intellectual' happens to have?
Please. Tell me somebody besides me, recognizes what this is a picture of.
Anybody?
Hint: "everybody's got one, and no one wants to hear about it."
Come on Folks...
Look at this picture... that says it all.
It's a puckered asshole for goodness' sake.
That's exactly what it is, not even from the looks of it a real one,
but a computer generated one...
So you really wanna get bummed out, about a talking simulated asshole?
Come on.
Save the chagrin for the real ones. They exist too.
In the meanwhile... let me add a couple more things,
as it was just accurately pointed out, it is the Christmas Season...
Maybe NOT the best time to do the Kayaks...
Maybe you should consider moving them, to a time
when not as much is going on...
February sounds good, same day The BEATLES played Ed Sullivan.
Why not.
Not sure of the actual date, maybe the 8th or 9th... it's on record,
one could look it up.
As for looking up this talking asshole, don't expect to see light
at the end of that tunnel. I doubt there is much.
There's much we don't know in life, and many of us will pontificate
as though it were otherwise.
I'm an Idiot/Savant, meaning I'm part idiot, (maybe a big part... I'll go that far)
and part genius. The genius however knows not to take his or herself too seriously, because once you've done that, it's about you, not about finding the answer.
Get it? It's about 'ooh how lofty I am!' and then forget it. An Idiot can beat that.
Never underestimate the smarts of a heart.
The beat is complete, it helps you find your feet.
Whoever this is, had nothing useful to add, so they just decided to present
themselves as an oil slick of negative opinion. Go join SoundClick,
you'll fit right in, you puckered anus that seems able to talk.
There's nothing wrong with the 1960s, it's such a nice place to visit,
that yes, Some Of Us DO Live There. And that's my prerogative.
I make 'em like I like to hear 'em. I've done other styles of music, many,
I'll get around to putting some out. I've even had believe it or not,
Hip Hop HITS! Yes I Have.
Name one?
You're on.
"Professor Von Biggernegga" by American Lesley Jane. Big Big Hit.
That one impressed a lot of people in high places, believe it or not.
Maybe I'll put it out at some point if anybody's curious to hear it...
Scott, you're like an Older Brother to me,
many is the time you've been there to reassure me,
so I shall now try as your honorary younger sister to reassure you.
A lot of times, we just do not see the value in what we do...
This is for a lot of reasons... some is just stuff beyond the horizon
that one may not readily see... other factors include, because we're artists,
we're extra sensitive... so that, when we get a case of the doubt shivers and fear douchechills, our own thoughts, can actually sound, like this talking asshole.
Hey, you wouldn't be a News Commentator, would you, Asshole?
What.
Please don't anybody tell me I'm out of line here, LOOK AT THE PICTURE!
Scott, my friend, Onward and Upward.
Those who wanna come back will come back, those who don't,
miss out on the Coolest Indie Community In The World. So to hell with 'em.
We're all here, we're all resolved to make this exactly that;
The Coolest Indie Community In The World.
Asshole. Thank you for taking the time, to exhibit true Olympic Form
in Flatulence... and ----pew!--- uh, sharing, uh, your opinions.
Always nice to hear from an Asshole. Puts it all in perspective, does it not?
Ah, but it does! Oui Oui.
But that's not a bad idea
to not have the Kayaks during the Christmas Season...
'cause, tis the season to be already doin' other stuff, you know?
I nominate Dan The Bull, For Just Being Terribly Cool.
Ain't made a record since who? since when?
If you're anywhere near NY, or gonna be, I'll produce a record for you.
I won't even flirt with you like I did with Larree, 'cause I realized pretty
soon after, what an asshole I must have sounded like.
Well not 'cause I flirted with him, so much, more 'cause of the crazy bickering
that went on between us, as though we were a bitter old married couple,
which is illogical, we've never even met.
Though the offer (of producing a record for you if you want, Lar, not the other stuff)
is still open.
Indies...
You Are The Future.
Create Accordingly.
Which means, Play and Sing What Is In Your Heart,
and if it sounds like, whatever, if you are solid with it,
that will come across to the listener.
Enthusiasm, is contagious. Also, lack of Enthusiasm is contagious.
Catch the Buzz. Be Enthusiastic.
Make the sound you love. Some of us may love it too.
Merry Christmas Everybody...
Oh yeah, I just put out a nice new Christmas record,
"Tropical Christmas" by American Lesley Jane
I think it came out swell. Yes, I still say swell.
I also say 'keen' 'groovy' and on occasion 'nifty' as well.
I am THAT Bad Ass.
It takes one tough beyotch to say such words without blinking.
I am that beyotch.
And see? I can talk as long and as loud as ANY asshole can.
Hey! Follow Me On Twitter, and feel like a schmuck!
Well because I'm not on Twitter, so you'd be wasting your time.
Much like this talking asshole is. Go back to the Newsroom, Asshole.
The Propaganda Machine Called And Wants You Back.
I'm American Lesley Jane, I'm absolutely adorable, and I approved this message.
Thank you. Merry Christmas, Happy Chanuka, Jolly Kwanza,
And Reverent Ramadan or however you're supposed to say that one.
God Loves Us All. We're the idiots who fail to grasp that one.
Usually because we take on a form resembling the intellectual here...
And now... Your Moment Of Zen.
