Vocal Mic
Anybody got a favorite vocal mic? What's the best vocal mic for the buck in your opinion?
I know there's some "Pro" produced stuff on here so no need to list the multi thousand dollar Neumann's here.

Are you looking for live sound, studio, or combined
There are condenser mics --best for recording too fragile for gigs-- for $100 or less
EV or shire dynamics under 100$ SM57 is all purpose

The best "budget" mic for all purpose use is the Shure SM58 in my opinion. It's less than $200 and sounds very good. I like the SM57 for recording a kick drum or to mic a guitar amp. The SM 58 is good for vocals and acoustic guitars. It's all in the ear of the beholder!

The Sure SM58 is pretty much the standard used in during live performances
I prefer the SM57 Beta for recording and on stage.

The SM 57 beta is about 130 dollars and has a lower frequency range that suits my voice well.

In my personal option large diaphragm condenser mics take some getting used to. You pretty much have to have noiseless environment and good breath control or they will catch every lip smack which can be highly annoying.

The best advice I can give you is go to your local music store and try a few mics in person. Listening in headphones is deceiving I recommend listening through standard studio monitor which any major music store will have setup.

I've got a 58. Wondering what's a good "step up" without breaking the bank.

If you already have a SM58 then likely your next step is some kind of condenser MIC which are not with out challenges that I already mentioned.

You can look at the True blue spark its about 300 or the MXL 990
If your go to the condenser Mic realm one thing you might look for is a multi pattern mic. At least if you go in this direction you can get your monies worth with different applications.
